Scope of Position

The Naturalist and Activities Manager 
Scope and General Purpose
Instrumental in developing the activities and recreation for the Weekapaug Inn, with the goal of enhancing the guests experience and increasing guest satisfaction.

Basic Function:
Naturalist and Activities Manager will maintain a visible presence with guests and serve as a guide and interpreter for those who are interested in the natural setting of the Inn. The Naturalist will serve as a resident historian and a concierge of sorts, helping guests appreciate the Inn, its setting, and the resources that the greater area offers.

The Naturalist will conduct classes, lead tours and help to make the Inn a unique and highly desirable property. As Recreation Manager, this person is responsible for developing, maintaining, and overseeing recreational activity at the Inn. These services include boating, waterfront activities, bicycles, charters, and sightseeing tours on water and land. The Activities Manager will also oversee activities for children which will incorporate aspects of both the natural learning and recreation programs.

The Naturalist and Activities Manager will assume tasks and projects as assigned by the General Manager during the off-season.

Job Duties:
Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a climate that attracts, retains and motivates top quality staff.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, support, develop, promote and guide qualified activity team members.
  • Effectively enable the recreational team staff so they can take action on behalf of the Company by transmitting the Company’s values, vision and direction; providing direction and resources, removing barriers and helping develop people’s skills; articulating expectations and clarifying roles and relationships.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all of the resort activities and recreation for the Weekapaug Inn.
  • Assist on selecting and purchasing all equipment and supplies for the recreation activities.
  • Develop and coordinate means to seek regular input from the inn’s guests regarding the quality of programs and services.

Maintenance:

  • Responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness and storage of all recreational equipment.
  • Organizing all storage of recreational items during off season.
  • Develop, implement and monitor systems and procedures necessary to the smooth operation of the activities and recreation.

Internal Relationships:

  • Reports to the General Manager and supervises the associates working the recreational department.
  • Works closely with the management team at the Inn and the communication/sales departments of the Ocean House.

External Relationships:

  • Has regular contact with the inn’s guests, and communications agencies. Maintains appropriate relationships with these and other constituencies in order to enhance the image of the Company and the attainment of its objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Recreation Management or Environmental Sciences preferred.
  • Boat Captain License Preferred.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently handle multiple, simultaneous, and complex tasks and projects.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Information research, analysis, and evaluation skills.
  • Knowledge of office management principles and procedures.
