Nature Navigator

The primary role of the Nature Navigator is commitment to the following tasks and responsibilities to help The Nature Place make connections between people and nature, for the benefit of both. It will bridge responsibilties within the Community Program and Visitor Services departments of The Nature Place, helping the public navigate all aspects of our community space and community programming.

Time Requirements
Typical schedule includes Tuesday – Saturday daytime hours, including occasional evening hours. 35-40 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Gardens & Grounds

  • Assist with the maintenance and care of the gardens and grounds, including 5 acres of park space, 7 native gardens, and demonstration produce garden
  • Train under the mentorship of the Master Gardeners & Master Naturalist to support their work in the 7 native gardens
  • Work independently to complete daily tasks, which include: transplanting, weeding, trimming tall plants, watering, etc.
  • Design displays for the native gardens kiosk
  • Assist in developing/implementing seasonal plans

Community Programming

  • Assist with teaching and general supervision of nature programs for all ages of community members, including nature themed birthday parties & group naturalist programs
  • Assist with community science initiatives supported by The Nature Place
  • Teach programs with live animals
  • Represent The Nature Place at community booths and events

 Operations & Visitor Services

  • Help the public navigate our building and grounds during open hours and offer educational insights about the surrounding natural areas
  • Engage visitors to meet their needs, interests or curiosity about The Nature Place and advance the mission of The Nature Place
  • Conduct tours of The Nature Place
  • Assist with facility-related needs for The Nature Place operations
  • Ensure that The Nature Place and Community Program policies and safety procedures are followed

Capstone Project

  • 1700 hour AmeriCorps Members will have the opportunity to develop a significant program series or select a project that will leave a lasting contribution within their program area, the department, or the organization.
