Position Summary: 

The NC State Manager is responsible for leading Dogwood Alliance’s organizing and campaign efforts in NC. They will cultivate relationships with NC communities and organizations and identify political and regulatory opportunities. This position will work closely with Dogwood Alliance Team members to connect NC networks with regional and national work. 

This position will coordinate with Dogwood Alliance staff to integrate various organizational goals. This includes the organization’s conservation efforts, federal campaign, and regional organizing activities. 

Location & Travel: This position is remote, with preference for candidates based in Eastern North Carolina. This position utilizes frequent Zoom meetings and phone calls. This position requires travel in/to Eastern NC, with some additional travel in other parts of the state and in the Southeast region. Travel will be approximately 20% of hours worked per month (approximately 3-4 days a month). Most travel can be completed within normal working hours, with the occasional overnight travel. Some nights and weekends (remote or in person) will be required, depending on occasion. Travel costs are covered by the organization. The NC Campaign Manager will work with their supervisor to ensure travel is reasonable and balanced with other work. 

Key Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities of the role include:

Strategic Planning, Reporting, and Evaluation

  • Develop, implement, and report on a strategic NC campaign and organizing plan. Include measurable outcomes, progress indicators, strategies, and activities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of strategies and activities.

Building Authentic Relationships

  • Regular communications with impacted community members. Maintain a strong understanding of community priorities and needs.
  • Coordinate and manage existing campaign partnerships with allied organizations. Build new partnerships with priority stakeholder groups.
  • Travel to NC communities impacted by wood pellet biomass production and export facilities. Document facility impacts and support impacted community members with on the ground efforts.
  • Lead Dogwood Alliance involvement in NC coalitions.
  • Regular communication and outreach with influential stakeholders such as elected officials and government agencies.

Building Support for the NC Campaign & Dogwood Alliance Priorities 

  • Plan and lead events to generate media and maintain visibility with campaign targets and the general public.
  • Stay up to date on relevant issues affecting the NC campaign.

Communications

  • Collaborate with the Dogwood Alliance Communications & Marketing Department to:
    • Create online action and engagement opportunities for the Dogwood member listserv.
    • Develop and write blogs, emails, and e-actions for the campaign.
    • Serve as key spokesperson for media reporting on the wood pellet industry in NC.
    • Create outreach materials to support movement building and political advocacy.

Management and Reporting

  • This position manages consultants that support the NC campaign. These include 3 community organizers and the NC Lobbyist.
  • Hold weekly meetings with the Organizing Director.
  • Attend weekly team coordination meetings.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a three-month work plan and weekly priorities.
  • Develop quarterly work reports for the Supervisor.

Competencies & Experience: 

The NC State Manager is a management-level position requiring experience in the following areas: 

  • Training or experience in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Environmental Justice, or Racial Equity/Justice.
  • 1-3 years of experience organizing, coalition building or helping communities build power
  • Prior manager experience (manager experience could be related to the formal or informal supervision interns, volunteers, other organizers if formal direct-report experience is missing).
  • Lived experience in a community impacted by industrial logging or biomass is a plus but not required.

A successful candidate will have skills and experiences in the following areas: 

  • Relationship building with various communities across racial, socioeconomic, and ethnic lines.
  • Experience communicating through a variety of mediums: written, oral, social, and more.
  • Ability to manage time and projects effectively, balancing projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental justice, social justice, and other intersectional movements.
  • Strong sense of teamwork and collaborative work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to take strong direction and work with multiple stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary range is $50,000 – $60,000 depending on experience. Benefits package includes health insurance, SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with employer contribution, generous paid time off, and an excellent, remote working environment. See a summary of our benefits here

The current salary range for this position is in line with our existing compensation framework. We are actively conducting a comprehensive review and restructure of our compensation structure. This may lead to an increase in the offered package as new structures are implemented in 2024 & 2025.
