FHI 360 has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in growing their health communication skills. Under close supervision, an intern will perform entry level professional duties which will provide the opportunity for professional training in various functional areas throughout the organization. Internship assignments serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to a global nonprofit development organization.

The Social Marketing and Communication (SMC) department within FHI 360’s U.S. Programs is a national leader in applying a science-based approach to social marketing and communication to address public health and other challenges in the U.S. SMC currently implements a diverse portfolio of social marketing, public relations, communication, and training and technical assistance projects in the U.S. that are funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, private associations, and foundations. In the past decade, our team has worked on issues such as diabetes, emergency and pandemic preparedness, obesity prevention, sexual health, HIV/AIDS, cancer, asthma, immunizations, violence prevention, access to health care, and tobacco control and cessation. This position will provide communication support to the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR). NCCOR brings together the nation’s leading research funders—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), and U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA)—to address the problem of childhood obesity in America. The NCCOR Communications intern will assist in implementing NCCOR’s day-to-day communication strategy, which will include developing press releases, newsletters, social media content, and using Google Analytics and Google Ads to enhance promotional efforts.

This is a paid internship with a flexible schedule based on project needs.

Anticipated Duration: Summer 2024: May – August

Hours: Part time, 20 hours per week

Pay Rate: $24.00/hour (Master’s)

Location: United States, remote (strong preference given to candidates residing in the Eastern time zone)

Anticipated Project(s) and Assignment Details:

The intern may contribute to various team or project activities under the direction of their supervisor in the following ways:

  • Audit the Collaborative’s social media practices and make recommendations on an updated strategy.
  • Utilize Google Analytics and analytics from social media sites to track website and social media metrics.
  • Assist in implementing Google Ads campaigns to promote NCCOR resources and events.
  • Contribute to the development of social media content across platforms.
  • Support updates to the NCCOR website.
  • Assist in implementing NCCOR’s day-to-day communication strategy, which will include developing press releases, newsletters, and more.
  • Help coordinate webinars.
  • Assist with additional project-related tasks, as needed.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Currently enrolled in a master’s degree program at a college or university in a health communications, communications, or public health field of study or within one year of graduation date
  • Demonstrated interest in health communications through studies, work experience, childhood obesity, nutrition, or physical activity content knowledge a plus.
  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
  • Strong writing and research skills
    • Please submit a writing sample: blog or a short writing for social media
  • Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English
  • Google Analytics and Google Ads skills preferred
  • Must have social media experience (Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook)
