Job Description

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 27,000 refugees from 50 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 1,000 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 2,500 refugees and asylees. 

SCOPE OF YOUTH FUTURES PROGRAM: The Youth Futures Program addresses the specific social and academic needs of refugee and asylee youth at Clarkston High School through an after-school program and summer camp. Centered on both academic support and social-emotional learning, the after-school program assists students with their daily homework and school projects, fostering not only academic excellence but also nurturing essential social and emotional skills. This position will be an active part of the IRC’s youth education team. The hours for this position are typically between 10:00am and 6:00pm; however, the position often requires flexible hours and weekend work to chaperone field trips. 

PLEASE NOTE: This position is a Notre Dame Mission Volunteer (NDMV) AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps oversight will be conducted through NDMV of Atlanta, and the IRC will serve as a site placement. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing support to the Youth Futures Team in all aspects of program design and implementation, including:
  • Planning and preparing for afterschool program and summer camp activities.
  • Assisting with program logistics, including facilitating tutoring and supporting volunteer tutors.
  • Attending programs and helping with activities, including conducting one-on-one check-ins and assisting high school students with homework and college preparation.
  • Offering general administrative assistance as required.
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and organizing program-related files.
  • Collaborating in recruiting student participants for various projects and events.
  • Facilitating regular meetings to discuss progress, address concerns, and foster a supportive environment for students.
  • Supporting the team with home visits for students.
  • Researching community resources to support youth academic, vocational, and social needs.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • High punctuality and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to upholding ethical standards and confidentiality in all interactions.
  • An interest in social justice, education, and refugee issues.
  • Comfortable accompanying youth program staff on home visits.
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule that occasionally includes evenings and weekends.
  • Strong desire to help people, and enthusiasm and sensitivity for working in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Familiarity with educational support and systems is preferred.
  • Experience working with youth and/or young adults is preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle is preferred. 
  • Proficiency in common client languages (Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Swahili, French, Burmese, Karen, etc.) is beneficial.
