JOB SUMMARY

The Network Technician installs distribution networks for campus voice, and data, performing moves, adds, and changes to the existing infrastructure and equipment. They are responsible for the installation, activation, and testing of telecommunications infrastructure and equipment for campus capital projects and building remodels. The incumbent will assist with testing and repair of existing services as required.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $33.45 – $39.36/hour.  Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

65% – Technical Support for Voice and Data Services

  • With minimal supervision, plans and implements UCSC voice and network moves, adds, changes, and expanded service requests for voice, data, and wireless networks.
  • Installs, terminates, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, and documents copper and fiber optic cabling systems, and ensures that industry and campus standards are met. This includes but is not limited to analog phones, VoIP phones, fax, Ethernet, 4-wire circuits, alarms, CAT5/6/6A, and Single mode fiber optics.
  • Performs cross-connects on all Distribution Frames (ADF/MDF/IDF); repairs or replaces defective wiring and connections; rearranges wire or terminates permanent connections as necessary to implement service order requests.
  • Completes service orders/trouble tickets by the assigned due date and documents services performed in the ticketing/timekeeping system including logging actual labor hours per guidelines on capital and renovation projects.
  • Drives and maintains University service vehicles to all on-campus locations and off-site locations, including but not limited to: Coastal Sciences Campus, Scotts Valley Center, and Silicon Valley Institute.
  • Performs fire stopping in all conduits, stub outs, and telecommunications pathways to maintain safe environments.
  • Maintains hand tools and specialized equipment, including test equipment and computers.
  • Escalates any unusual or problem areas to the lead technician or supervisor for assistance and/or resolution.

15% – Perform Technical Support Functions

  • Performs system maintenance including system and station level and port level diagnostics and repair.
  • Works with Telecom and Network Analysts to diagnose and resolve system malfunctions or failures.
  • Responds to after-hours system outages as needed.
  • Installs voice/data equipment and components to facilitate system installations, repairs, upgrades, and maintenance.

10% – Maintenance of Database Records Updates

  • Collaborates with Engineering and Construction Management Team, Client Support Services, and Network teams to provide updates to cable documentation including but not limited to cut sheet information, active components, and rack elevations.
  • Performs technology room (TR) maintenance per established guidelines.

10% – Associated Responsibilities

  • Supports departmental goals of providing positive, innovative, and effective customer service through the performance of job functions.
  • Attends and completes department-sponsored training to upgrade knowledge in industry standards, new equipment, new technology, industry practices, and department Standard Operating Procedures.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of telecommunications terminology and applications.
  • Knowledge of communication requirements for voice, data terminal and wireless equipment.
  • Knowledge of analog, digital and fiber optic transmission media.
  • Knowledge sufficient to perform electronic systems troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of industry installation, termination, labeling, and standards.
  • Experience in placing, splicing and testing cable plant, including copper, and fiber optics.
  • Experience in placing, pulling, and terminating inside wire and fiber, in making terminal block connections, telecommunications closets (ADF/BDF/IDF) layout and design, and cable arrangements.
  • Demonstrated experience with copper, and fiber optic cable, Local Area Network (LAN) systems, Wireless Network systems, and knowledge of the relative properties and procedures.
  • Ability to use copper, fiber, and wireless test equipment and tools for troubleshooting and repair of campus cabling infrastructure and network services.
  • Excellent organizational ability to prioritize workload and meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent record-keeping skills to document service performed, complete recharge documents and maintain current floor plans and cable records.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including diplomacy and flexibility to work effectively with management, faculty, vendors, staff and students.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical issues to others.
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical issues to others.
  • Demonstrated skills in designing, estimating, and implementing OSI Physical layer for voice, data, and wireless networks.
  • Experienced in reading, interpreting and explaining technical diagrams, specifications and cable records.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experienced using drawing software, AutoCAD, Visio, or Paint, to manipulate floor and site plans as well as technical schematics.
  • Experience using Fluke Test equipment and Fiber Optic Fusion Splicers.
  • Ability to configure basic switch parameters, copy/paste port level configuration, enable/disable ports, and perform basic switch changes via configuration scripts.
  • Certifications from BICSI, Cisco, Leviton, Corning, etc.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
