Under the direction of a supervisory official in the State Agriculture Development Committee (SADC), this position will assist in the research, design, development, and implementation of a comprehensive system to identify, train, equip, and support the next generation of NJ farmers. The position will assist in analyzing and developing strategies to substantially increase access to land and improve land tenure relationships; assist in analyzing major obstacles and opportunities; recommend changes in state and federal policy, rules, and legislation to achieve the goals of a next-generation farmer program, including the utilization of State-owned farmland; assist in creating a comprehensive reference information database for all aspects of “next gen” farming efforts and make the information readily accessible to the public; assist in establishing a robust and effective mentoring program between retiring and new/prospective farmers; collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders including American Farmland Trust, NJ-based land trusts, Rutgers University Cooperative Extension, NJ Farm Bureau, urban agriculture gardens & initiatives, NOFA-NJ, NJ Dept. of Labor, and county and local partners on development and implementation of the program, with particular emphasis on reaching diverse participants, women owned business interests, and underserved communities; collaborate with Joint Base MDL to give U.S. Veterans the opportunity to pursue agriculture as their next career in connection with current marketing programs aimed at “Homegrown Heroes” and other farmer veteran resources; and do other related duties as required.
EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree.
FOREIGN DEGREES: Degrees and/or transcripts issued by a college or university outside of the United States must be evaluated by a reputable evaluation service at your expense. This evaluation must be included with your submission and failure to submit the required evaluation may result in an ineligibility determination.
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of cumulative work experience in agriculture, environmental science, conservation, land use, planning, food systems, farming, farm business management, farm viability, or related fields in the public or private sector. Preferably, this experience will also include using skills such as organizing projects, implementing programs, collaborating within teams, working with diverse audiences, assisting with training, conducting research and writing, or conducting outreach and marketing. Hands-on farm production, marketing, financial management, and land acquisition experience are also preferred.
NOTE: A Master’s degree in Agricultural Science, Agricultural Management, Food/Agricultural Policy, Food Systems, Land Use Planning, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Life Sciences, Business Management, Public Policy, Marketing, Communications, Education, or other related field may be substituted for one (1) year of required experience.
