The Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is seeking a Non-Game Biologist/Malacologist for a full-time, contract-funded position. The Non-Game Biologist/Malacologist will be housed within the PA Fish and Boat Commission’s Natural Diversity Section. The Non-Game Biologist/Malacologist conducts species impact reviews, collects and manages data for the state’s endangered, threatened and special concern freshwater mollusks (primarily freshwater mussels), and works closely with the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program staff. The primary emphasis is to assess project impacts on species habitats, prepare written responses, and advise environmental consultants. Additionally, the Non-Game Biologist/Malacologist leads studies on freshwater mollusks, assesses species statewide conservation statuses, develops and implements species management plans for non-game or endangered species, provides support for population augmentation and reintroductions, communicates scientific information in reports and presentations, and develops policies.
Qualifications:
Qualifications include knowledge and experience with Pennsylvania’s native freshwater mussels primarily, but also other aquatic mollusks and invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and their related ecosystems. Candidates should have a 4-year degree in biology, ecology, or zoology, with a concentration in malacology, fisheries, aquatic invertebrate zoology or a related natural science area; master’s degree preferred. Additionally, 3 years of professional experience in the field of malacology or aquatic invertebrate zoology is preferred. A successful candidate has excellent communication skills, experience with databases and Geographic Information Systems, knowledge of survey and assessment techniques, and familiarity with NatureServe conservation status assessment methodology and species management plans.
