OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

In the framework of the 42 C/5 Major Programme II, and under the overall supervision of the Director of the Ecological and Earth Sciences Division (SC/EES) and the direct supervision of the Chief of Section, SC/EES/NBC, the consultant will support the scientific activities related to the implementation of the UNESCO-MAB Amazon project on the “Amazon biosphere reserves project: Improving the resilience and halting biodiversity loss of the greater Amazon Basin.” Specifically, the consultant will provide research and technical support to the Chief of Section, countries, and biosphere reserves (BR) involved in the preparation and implementation of the research component of the Amazon project activities.

  1. Main functions

Support biosphere reserves to better identify and address emerging challenges and pressures from climate change, land use change, and economic forces underlying deforestation (including through fire):

  1. Provide biosphere reserves managers’ and other key stakeholder with access to data, information, and tools for implementing BR Management Plans.
  2. Support in the development and revision of technical notes and reports regarding the project themes (e.g.

governance, fires, carbon credits).

  • Provide maps on the baseline data (e.g., fire burn areas, number of fires, deforestation, or any other topic related), as well as the QGIS project templates based on the visual identity of the project in three languages (English, Spanish and Portuguese), to be uses in word, PPT and web formats.

Support biosphere reserves in building capacity to develop integrated landscape management plans:

  1. Provide a technical report on the contributions of at least 8 (1 per biosphere reserve) local initiatives based on the framework established by the scientific team, and including multi-temporal satellite imagery locating the initiatives in the landscape and the pressures they aim to address.
  2. Develop governance analysis to support f Management and Action Plans update.
  3. Provide instructions for the use of the geospatial database and QGIS project templates.
  4. Support BR Managers and National Focal Points in implementing the database-monitoring system of place-based initiatives previously developed by the Scientific Committee.
  5. Provide technical support to BRs requests within the project objectives.

Develop scientific content to support project results dissemination:

  1. Support access and dissemination of knowledge and content preparation for dissemination events about BRs and their importance to stakeholders and the larger public.
  2. Revise project communication outputs (leaflets, brochures, posters).
  3. Produce a scientific manuscript on the deforestation in the project biosphere reserves.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • PhD on Environmental Sciences or related.

Work Experience

  • Work experience in research in socio-ecological systems in the Amazon and in biosphere reserves.

 

  • Progressively responsible, relevant professional work experience in land use and land change trend analysis.

 

Skills and competencies

  • Good knowledge of Remote sensing and GIS
  • Good knowledge of Biosphere reserves
  • Good knowledge of Territorial management

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of the English language (both written and spoken).
  • Very Good Knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese.
