About the role

The Our Way Our Say program has been co-designed with Larrakia and other First Nations Peoples living in the Darwin region as part of the National Suicide Prevention Trial. Our Way Our Say aims to deliver culturally safe, evidence informed, holistic, skills-based approach to mental health and suicide prevention education for middle and senior school students.

The NT Our Way Our Say Coordinator will be highly experienced in coordinating programs of work, with a strong track record of working with schools and communities. They will have a depth of understanding of the socio-political influences on First Nations young peoples’ social and emotional wellbeing.

The NT Program Coordinator will hold accountability for Our Way Our Say program implementation and the oversight of day-to-day program operations. This position calls for a motivated and articulate individual who is highly skilled in organising and motivating a small collaborative team and working with a First Nations local governing body, as well as other wide and varied stakeholders including school staff, students, mental health and wellbeing service providers, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.

The NT Program Coordinator role will be based in Darwin and provide support to OWOS Facilitators, school staff, students, and communities to implement, adapt and improve Our Way Our Say in readiness for program upscale within the NT.

Who we’re looking for

headspace is seeking someone with;

  • It is an essential operational requirement that this position is occupied by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person*
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge and understanding of First Nations Peoples cultures, social and emotional wellbeing frameworks, risk and protective factors, help seeking and suicide prevention, particularly relevant to First Nations Peoples living in the Greater Darwin region.
  • A strong understanding of youth mental health issues including suicide prevention and postvention and the impact of trauma on school communities.
  • Tertiary qualifications or significant demonstrated experience in education, health and/or relevant discipline.
  • A high level understanding of Government processes and policies, particularly relating to education, wellbeing and socio-economic issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
  • Experience working in similar level positions in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander policy, programs or services, and a track record of successful program delivery in complex environments with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience in the delivery of training and resource packages.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of school education systems, student health and wellbeing policies, frameworks and programs, youth mental health
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and organisational skills with the ability to operate effectively at a national level and build relationships and strategic partnerships with stakeholders including key government, non-government and community partners.
  • Capacity to travel.
