Under the supervision of an attending faculty physician and APP Supervisor, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide patient care for Ophthalmology surgery patients. Performs patient evaluations including history and physical, patient preparation, and management. Solve complex clinical problems and communicate directly with attending physicians. Provide patient education and assist with research protocols. Function as liaison with Ophthalmology’s faculty, and technical and support staff; anesthesia; UCSD community; and nurses. Assist in data collection, input, and analysis.

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area.

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum two (2) years of Pre-Op experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of common ophthalmic problems and treatments.

  • Knowledge and skill in providing comprehensive physical examination, specializing in surgical and anesthesia risk examinations.

  • Proven skill in counseling patients and families. Skill in telephone interviewing of patients to efficiently retrieve accurate information.

  • Strong skill in assessing patient and family education needs and designing appropriate teaching plan including evaluation.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, and procedures used in the clinic. Must understand purpose, required supplies and/or equipment, how to perform procedure accurately, infection control, and accurate documentation in medical chart.

  • Demonstrated skill in clinical data collection and computerized database management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively handle a broad range of professionals, paraprofessionals, patients, and general public.

  • Experience with a wide variety of patient populations.

  • Ophthalmology experience.

  • Knowledge of patient education resources at UC San Diego Health and in the community.

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.

  • Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $158,187 – $221,370 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $75.76 – $106.02

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
