Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA’s Major Programme 2, “Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection”. This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for the nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. Specifically, the Division provides support to Member States in the following fields: production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for applications in health care and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilization; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion and isotope hydrology and geochemistry.The Physics Section is responsible for planning and implementing activities in the areas of (i) effective utilization of research reactors, (ii) fostering relevant research and development and applications using particle accelerators and related instrumentation, and (iii) plasma physics and fusion, in order to enable Member States to avail themselves of the benefits of nuclear sciences and technologies. It operates the Nuclear Science and Instrumentation Laboratory, located at the Agency’s Laboratories in Seibersdorf, which assists laboratories in Member States to improve the effective utilization of nuclear spectrometry and related instrumentation by providing technical advice, training, calibration services, assistance with the modification and development of nuclear instruments and with new applications of nuclear spectrometry techniques in various fields, including energy related applications, environmental monitoring, industry, and the study of cultural heritage objects.

Main Purpose

As a key team member reporting to the Section Head, the Nuclear Physicist (Research Reactors) implements projects and supports international cooperation in the development of research reactor-based techniques and applications, and fosters exchange of scientific results among the various partners. Additionally, she/he supports Member States through advice on the role and utilization of research reactors by fostering collaborations among various stakeholders, including academia and industry.

Role

The Nuclear Physicist (Research Reactors) is: (1) a team member, formulating, developing, organizing and implementing the IAEA’s activities on utilization and applications of research reactors; and (2) a specialist, coordinating research through coordinated research projects, evaluating and implementing technical cooperation projects and helping Member States make best use of different types of research reactors as well as related instrumentation for various applications including capacity building.

Functions / Key Results Expected

• Organize and implement activities (coordinated research projects, thematic meetings, workshops) to support emerging promising applications of research reactors.
• Serve as scientific secretary in Technical Meetings and Research Coordination Meetings and support cross-cutting IAEA activities related to research reactors, including the organization of the IAEA Research Reactor Conference, as well as participate in other meetings as necessary.
• Compile, or coordinate the preparation of, proceedings or technical reports and documents. Ensure the quality and timely updating of the IAEA’s neutron source and neutron instrumentation databases.
• Evaluate and identify novel/existing techniques for utilizing research reactors in bringing the benefits of nuclear science and technology to the Member States.
• Evaluate and recommend proposals for the award of research contracts and technical cooperation projects in the above fields.
• Provide technical advice for technical cooperation projects with relevance to research reactor utilization and applications.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

• Minimum five years of combined professional experience at the national/international level in the applications of neutron based nuclear techniques and methods, with emphasis on research and applications with research reactors.
• Familiarity with the requirements in developing countries and/or collaboration with research reactor users in developing countries.
• Proven skills in writing technical reports and research papers.
• Experience in organizing technical meetings/workshops and training courses is desirable.
• Excellent oral and written command of English. Experience in technical writing in English for producing and reviewing scientific and/or technical documents in the subject area; Knowledge of any other official IAEA language (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $64121 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 38344, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
