GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Nursing Assistant/Unit Clerk’s primary job function is to perform a variety of basic patient care activities for the personal needs and comfort of patients and families while preparing for surgery and discharge. Also is to perform clerical duties associated with preparing, compiling, and maintaining patients’ records on a clinical nursing unit. Supports each Strategic Value by providing excellent care to those we serve. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

Ability to read, write, and speak English required

Working knowledge of medical terminology required

Licensure:

BLS within 90 days of hire required

Experience:

At least one year medical/surgical experience preferred. Job related experience preferred.

Interpersonal Skills:

Good interpersonal skills needed in dealing with nursing staff, physicians, patients, families, other members of the health care team and other customers.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills:

Precise hand/eye coordination to input/transcribe physicians’ orders into a computer in an accurate and timely fashion. Ability to speak clearly in regards to questions about physicians’ orders, etc. Legible handwriting.

Essential Physical Requirements:

The physical demand level is very heavy. Occasionally lifts in excess of 100 pounds and frequently lifts 50 – 100 pounds when transferring and positioning patients. Stand and/or walks with regular breaks four to six hours per day when providing supportive services and basic nursing procedures. Ability to use hands for repetitive simple grasping, fine manipulation, and pushing and pulling when attending and operating patient care equipment. Bends, squats, climbs, and reaches above shoulder level occasionally when storing and retrieving supplies and filing.

Essential Mental Requirements:

Has frequent contact with the general public and customer when relating to patient families and the customer when performing care. Must be able to cope when occasionally working under close supervision and without the assistance of other personnel. Requires the ability to frequently concentrate and pay close attention to detail when transcribing physicians’ orders and maintaining patients’ charts. Must also frequently cope with deadlines under pressure.

Essential Sensory Requirements:

Good vision and hearing is required when performing job duties such as taking patient’s temperature and observing patient. The ability to communicate clearly is continuously required when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and reporting to nursing staff any pertinent data regarding the patient.

Exposure to Hazards:

Exposure to body fluids, unpleasant odors, fumes, toxic substances, and dust. Standard precautions are priority.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Performs basic patient care activities/treatments/ and daily assignments.
  • Observes patients and reports unusual conditions and/or reactions to the registered nurse.
  • Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients.
  • Answer call lights and responds to patient needs.
  • Maintains patient environment and performs routine cleaning tasks in nursing unit/patient rooms.
  • Documents according to policy.
  • Alerts staff when supplies are needed, replenishes stock, and runs errands.
  • Maintains positive interactions with customers.
  • Contributes and fosters the team approach in all unit operations.
  • Orders tests, treatments, and supplies.
  • Maintains patients’ records.
  • Functions as a communications source for the nursing unit.
  • Records data, reports, and enters patient charges and other information.
  • Gathers and distributes departmental mail.
  • Welcomes and greets those coming onto the unit.
  • Uses telephone etiquette according to the SOMC “Code of Conduct”.
  • Pre-cleans, decontaminates and transports contaminated instruments according to policy
  • Performs intermediate-level disinfection and/ or high level disinfection per the Instructions for Use (IFU) by the manufacture. This includes ensuring the scopes or probes used within the department are cleaned, disinfected, maintained and stored per the IFU’s
  • Assists with hourly rounding.
  • Stocks non-PAR level supplies daily and weekly according to department needs.
  • Properly maintains equipment including removing damaged/ nonworking pieces of equipment and completing maintenance repair requests in a timely manner.

Completes yearly glucometer competency and completes finger sticks as needed. * Performs other duties as assigned.
