The New York Breeding Bird Atlas III Abundance team at Cornell (https://ebird.org/atlasny) is hiring a team of 12 (twelve) point counter temporary technicians to conduct surveys throughout New York State during the summer of 2024 (start date: 5/18/24; end date: 7/6/24).
The Temporary Technicians will conduct avian point count surveys at assigned roadside locations and some off-road locations, record distances and behavior codes of individual birds, and enter data into a database. Surveys will occur on both public and private land in all habitat types in New York State. Excellent bird identification skills by sight and sound and comfort working alone in remote areas is required. Off-trail hiking and prior experience estimating distances in the field are desired. Point counters will be trained and expected to deploy, retrieve, and use automated recording units.
This is a great opportunity to travel and contribute meaningfully to the conservation of bird populations in New York State through documenting the nearly 250 species of birds breeding in the State.
Qualifications:
Compensation: $19.25/hour. Hotels and a rental vehicle and/or mileage reimbursement will be provided. Technicians are responsible for providing their own binoculars, smartphone, laptop or tablet, and food.
