Occupational Health Adviser

The Student Occupational Health team is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, qualified Occupational Health Clinic Nurse with an interest in contributing to the continuous improvement culture within the existing team.  You will join a small, friendly team delivering specialist services to enrolled students at Cardiff University.  

This role is offered on a temporary basis for 12 months.

The successful candidate with work collaboratively with the administrative team in a busy service predominantly supporting healthcare students from enrolment to graduation. Experience in working autonomously and under pressure given the impact of the cyclical academic year is essential.  

Based at the Heath Park Campus the service predominantly supports healthcare students from enrolment through to graduation.  The Student Occupational Health Service operates within the Student Support and Wellbeing Division. 

This post requires experience of delivering vaccination programmes and venepuncture. 

The post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term for 12 months.  

Salary: £39,347 – £44,263 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description

Key Duties

  • Provide specialist Occupational Health advice and guidance to Academic and Professional staff in respect of registered students, as required, within the University ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  • Ensure the provision of a safe, clinically effective Occupational Health Service for students within a framework of clinical governance and clinical supervision prioritising the delivery of care on a clinical assessment of individual needs.
  • Deliver service provision independently within a multidisciplinary team in accordance with NMC guidance.
  • Develop programmes of care/rehabilitation, and advise on fitness to study/practise, for students as part of your clinical caseload with the provision of physical and mental assessment (as necessary) and recommending a range of options to support study/placement.
  • Deliver enrolment screening programmes for Healthcare Students to ensure fitness to commence academic study within the parameters outlined by professional regulatory bodies and supported by Higher Education Occupational Health Physicians (HEOPS).
  • Deliver clinically appropriate vaccination programmes to meet the requirements of Healthcare Students as prescribed by the Department of Health.
  • Deliver clinically appropriate screening and surveillance programmes to meet the requirements of students as required by legislation.
  • Investigate and analysis specific issues within the student population providing advice, guidance and recommendations to maximise student health and wellbeing.  
  • Undertake service delivery independently within specialist competency, knowledge and experience referring appropriately internally to the Occupational Health Physician or externally for the benefit and safety of staff, students and patients in an NHS environment.
  • To participate in evaluating developments within the profession of Occupational Health as influenced by changes in legislation or clinical guidance to ensure the Student Occupational Health Service delivers excellent standards of care.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required.
  • Contribute to small scale projects across the University to develop the understanding of Student Occupational Health amongst Colleges, Schools, Professional Services and Student Union to influence delivery according to service need.
  • Develop and deliver training within Colleges, Schools, Professional Services and Students Union to develop knowledge and understanding of Student Occupational Health with a view to benefiting the student experience.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) Council Registered General Nurse with a specialist qualification in Occupational Health (Degree or Post Graduate Diploma).
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Substantial experience of working within Occupational Health Service in a Healthcare environment.
  • Evidence based competency of delivering vaccination programmes and venepuncture.
  • Specialist knowledge in interpretation of blood borne virus laboratory results for Healthcare workers.
  • Strong IT skills including use of clinical software to manage electronic health records.
  • Customer Service, Communication and Team Working

  • Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people.
  • Evidence of ability to work as an effective team member and develop networks in order to contribute to long term development.
  • Planning, Analysis and Problem solving

  • Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions.
  • Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline.
  • Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams.
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of working as Occupational Health Adviser in a Higher Education environment.
  • Experience of working as an Occupational Health Adviser external to the NHS.
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
