About the Role

The position supports the development of, and delivers and embeds WWF’s oceans policy recommendations to achieve ambitious conservation outcomes including the protection of 100 million hectares of oceans in the Southern Hemisphere and the establishment of large scale Whale Blue Corridors.

The position assists in formulating and advocating key advice and policy at a national and regional level, and ensures WWF-Australia’s oceans policy recommendations to government are solution-focused, informed by science and in line with WWF’s global ocean protection goals.

The role works closely with WWF’s Global Oceans Practice as well as offices and experts throughout the WWF network.

Key Accountabilities (Refer to Person Description for full list of Key Accountabilities)

  • Develops strategies and implements plans to increase the protection of oceans domestically and regionally in line with WWF’s global 30 x 30 goals, seeking to ensure adequate ecological representation and science-based policy outcomes that benefit both people and nature.
  • Partners with WWF’s Global Whale and Dolphin Initiative to build a network of Blue Corridors that protect migratory routes for whales in Australian and Western Pacific seas.
  • Advocates for WWF’s priority strategic and geographic ocean conservation outcomes with key decision makers.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience (Refer to Person Description for full list of Selection Criteria)

  • Experience in the development and delivery of political and government advocacy strategies within a dynamic environment, including coordinating diverse organisations to deliver a set of common goals.
  • Demonstrated expertise in oceans policy, particularly regarding the implementation of Marine Protected Areas and other spatial protection measures including other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs).
  • Demonstrated experience in Australian and regional ocean conservation issues and a breadth of knowledge of environmental policies.
