Seas at Risk (SAR) is an umbrella organisation of environmental organisations from across Europe, working together to ensure that life in our seas and oceans is abundant, diverse, climate resilient, and not threatened by human activities. SAR is working on issues as diverse as marine protected areas, shipping, fisheries, deep-sea mining, and marine litter. We promote ambitious policies for marine protection at European and international level. Purpose of the job

SAR is seeking a policy officer to join our team and work on offshore renewable energy. The objective of our work is to ensure that the roll out of offshore renewable energy in European seas is done with nature in mind. The role will involve advocacy, communications, and collaboration with partner NGOs.

Main responsibilities

  • Develop and implement SAR’s policy work in the area of offshore renewable energy;
  • Monitor EU and international policy developments in relation to offshore renewable energy;
  • Ensure effective project management, including project budget management;
  • Draft position papers, policy briefings and reports;
  • Organize workshops and events;
  • Promote SAR policy within the EU institutions and internationally, as well as in relevant meetings and conferences;
  • Liaise with SAR members, exchanging national and EU information, addressing national and cross-country challenges, providing them with technical and political advice, and coordinating activities to influence EU decision-making;
  • Coordinate activities with other environmental and civil society organisations;
  • Respond to and generate media interest in SAR’s work;
  • Support fundraising, write grant proposals, report to funders;
  • Contribute to other SAR project areas when needed.

Qualification, experience, knowledge

  • Master’s degree or equivalent (e.g. extensive relevant work experience) in a related subject;
  • A passion for the ocean and environmental conservation;
  • Experience in advocacy, ideally on marine issues, and towards the European Parliament, the European Commission and Permanent Representatives;
  • Good insight into the functioning of the EU institutions;
  • Alignment with SAR’s ambition to address the root causes of the biodiversity and climate crises, and to develop systemic alternatives to the dominant growth based political economy;
  • At least two years of relevant work experience e.g., in project management or in an NGO;
  • Knowledge of environmental and governance aspects of offshore renewable energy at EU, regional or national levels is an asset;
  • Knowledge of wider renewable energy policies is an asset;
  • Excellent spoken and written English; knowledge of other languages an asset.

What we offer

Seas At Risk offers the opportunity to work in a growing NGO with a stimulating, informal, flexible and multicultural working environment.

The successful candidate will receive an open-ended contract with a gross monthly salary in the indicative range of €3,500 – €4,550 (negotiable according to experience) coupled with various benefits (including holiday bonus, 13th month, pension scheme, luncheon vouchers, work from home and representation allowances, contribution to public transport), and 32 days paid leave.

The post is based in Brussels, full time, to start as soon as possible. Flexible working time arrangements can be discussed.
