Offshore Wind Community Manager

Reporting to: Offshore Wind Communications Director
Supporting: ELM and New England for Offshore Wind 
Salary Range: $70,000-80,000

The Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM) is committed to advocating for policy that meets the scale and urgency of our environmental challenges. We are recruiting an Offshore Wind Community Manager to support the New England for Offshore Wind (NE4OSW) coalition and launch a Local Communications Program that will provide training, capacity, and support for offshore wind messaging in key local areas.  

NE4OSW (www.ne4osw.org) is a broad-based coalition committed to combatting climate change by increasing the supply of clean energy to our regional grid through more procurements of responsibly developed offshore wind.  

The Offshore Wind Community Manager will be an integral member of a collegial and effective 17-person advocacy team within ELM and will work closely with and support key NE4OSW partners’ local communications campaigns on offshore wind. Read our mission, vision, and values. 

General Description:
The Community Manager drives the growth of local community messaging in support of responsibly developed offshore wind energy facilities in the Northeast. They develop relationships with NE4OSW’s most engaged partners and recruit new partners in key local communities to enable crucial positive messaging on offshore wind. The Community Manager will report to the Offshore Wind Communications Director and work in close collaboration with ELM’s Offshore Wind Communications Coordinator, Offshore Wind Director, Policy and Advocacy Coordinator, and Vice President of Policy. 

Responsibilities:  

Implement NE4OSW Local Communications Program 

• Develop NE4OSW partner relations for Local Communications Program
• Ensure strong partner relations through travel to key communities throughout New England
• Develop media relationships in key communities and advise partners on distribution and placement of communications content
• Deliver communications trainings for key NE4OSW partners

Build Community Events/Manage Event Logistics

Advise Local Communications Program participants on:  

• Planning, design and logistics of Local Communications Program events
• Paid media opportunities that support Local Communications Program

Build NE4OSW Coalition Brand  

• Ensure NE4OSW visibility and strong community relations, including attendance at local offshore wind-related events
• Implement NE4OSW social media programs for X, Instagram, and LinkedIn to build NE4OSW coalition’s brand recognition and amplify Local Communications Program activities

Qualifications:  

Required

• Passion for NE4OSW’s Mission, Vision, and Values
• Commitment to centering racial justice and equity in ELM and NE4OSW’s work and ensuring an inclusive organizational culture
• Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
• Significant experience writing communications materials, including press releases and Letters to the Editor/Op-Eds, with demonstrated publication
• Experience with issue advocacy
• Understanding of environmental issues and the energy transition or ability and desire to learn quickly
• Ability to prioritize and effectively manage tasks in a fast–paced work environment; strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Ability to effectively grow community relationships
• Ability to adapt and tailor strategies to various audiences depending on geography, political landscape or other characteristics
• Ability and willingness to travel up to 40% of their time as needed to locations across New England
• Passion for people and coalition work and experience balancing competing priorities

Preferred  

• Understanding of U.S. offshore wind energy industry status and issues, particularly in New England
• Experience building social media and paid media campaigns and using social media tools
• Experience developing and maintaining communications campaign metrics
• Experience developing and coordinating small- to medium-size community events

Compensation & Benefits:

$70,000 to $80,000, depending on experience.  ELM provides generous paid time off, health insurance, Health Savings Account, and a 403(b) retirement plan with organization match. 

While the role is typically 40 hours per week, given the work, the Manager will periodically be expected to work during evenings and weekends and will have periods of heightened activity. The position can be based in any New England state and will require periodic travel within New England, including to ELM’s Boston office. We are willing to be flexible to accommodate remote work and a flexible schedule if requested.
