OHV Recreation Patroller — Kemmerer District

OHV Recreation Patrollers serve as public-facing stewards of responsible off-highway vehicle (OHV) use on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. This is a non-enforcement position focused on education, outreach, data collection, and light trail maintenance. Patrollers work closely with USFS staff while remaining employees of Friends of the Bridger-Teton and help supplement Forest Service capacity during peak summer OHV use.

Reports To: FBT Project Manager and USFS Supervisor
Seasonal Term: June–October 2026
Location: Kemmerer District
Working Hours: 30–40 hours per week, primarily Thursday–Sunday or Friday–Monday, including holidays, with additional weekday shifts during high-use periods as approved
Rate of Pay: $19.52/hr (GS5) plus mileage reimbursement

Responsibilities

Public Outreach & Education

• Engage directly with OHV users at trailheads and along designated routes.
• Provide education on responsible OHV use, trail etiquette, Wyoming OHV registration and user fee requirements.
• Share information on Leave No Trace principles, resource protection, route designation, travel management rules, and seasonal closures.
• Communicate trail conditions, weather considerations, and general safety messaging.
• Distribute educational materials provided by the Wyoming State Trails Program and project partners.

Data collection and Reporting

• Document required user contacts, including number of contacts, registration and user fee compliance observations, and general use patterns.
• Complete and submit monthly contact reports, mileage logs, and end-of-season summaries in accordance with State Trails Program requirements.

Trail Stewardship & Light Maintenance

• Assist with light trail maintenance activities consistent with grant guidelines.
• Check, install, and maintain trail signage and route markers.
• Clear small debris or obstructions from OHV routes.
• Assist with educational displays at trailheads.
• Report observed trail issues, resource damage, or safety concerns to USFS staff and FBT supervisors.

Coordination & Representation

• Serve as an informational liaison between the recreating public, FBT, the USFS, and the Wyoming State Trails Program.
• Work collaboratively with USFS staff operating under Trail Ranger grants when present.
• Represent FBT and project partners professionally, fostering positive and inclusive interactions with diverse recreation users.

Requirements

• Must be 18+ years of age.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with comfort engaging the public in outdoor settings.
• Experience with or strong familiarity with OHV recreation.
• Ability to work independently and responsibly in remote outdoor environments.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in variable summer weather conditions.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation suitable for forest roads.
• Willingness to travel within assigned ranger districts and complete required documentation.

Preferred

• Familiarity with Bridger-Teton National Forest recreation areas and travel management rules
• Background in outdoor education, interpretation, recreation management, or stewardship programs
• First Aid/CPR certification
• ATV/UTV certification
• Sawyer certification
• Prior experience working with public lands agencies or nonprofit conservation organizations
• Comfort using electronic reporting systems

Working Conditions

• Primarily outdoor work in forest and backcountry environments
• Exposure to heat, sun, dust, wind, insects, and uneven terrain
• Work is typically performed independently or in pairs
• Weekend and holiday work is required to align with peak OHV use
• Extended periods of seated driving on rough or remote roads
