Oil & Gas Campaigner

tendersglobal.net

Job description

The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) is the voice for Australia’s oceans. We are Australia’s leading ocean conservation organisation and one of the founding members of Australia’s conservation movement. We are a community of ocean lovers across the nation working to protect our precious marine wildlife and for healthy seas.

Australia’s oceans are at the forefront of the climate crisis. In some regions, marine waters are heating at four times the global average and wildlife are moving to cooler waters, drastically affecting ecosystem function. For the world to limit temperature rises to globally agreed targets, there can be no new fossil fuel developments, including from gas extracted from underneath the oceans. Infrastructure associated with exploration and extraction also has a direct impact on ocean wildlife, including cetaceans affected by seismic.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re seeking an experienced and effective campaigner to play a critical role in building and supporting strong public and stakeholder opposition to oil and gas developments, and work to raise awareness of the threat of the offshore oil and gas industry to marine ecosystems and wildlife, with a specific focus on south-eastern waters.

The Oil and Gas Campaigner will lead the outreach, facilitation and campaign work to ensure that AMCS has a strong and vibrant movement to protect our oceans from offshore oil and gas. They will work in close collaboration with established community and stakeholder groups and allied organisations. The position will work with the AMCS Communications team to support the delivery of engaging communications material and build a strong public and social media profile for the campaign.

This role involves:

  • Developing and implementing campaign engagement strategies and plans for AMCS volunteers to stop new offshore oil and gas exploration and acreage releases.
  • Developing and delivering AMCS outreach and support of existing community and stakeholder groups to achieve campaign objectives.
  • Working with the AMCS Oil and Gas communications lead to support the development of communications and social media content for community organising, including written and online community campaign materials that inspire and engage target audiences.
  • Engaging with relevant offshore government approvals processes and public comment periods, as required.
  • Integrating key policy and regulatory processes into the campaign engagement strategies, plans and activities.
  • Supporting community groups, allies and AMCS supporters to engage with relevant regulatory and policy activation opportunities.

Please see the attached PD for a full list of responsibilities and further details on the role including the selection criteria. For more information on AMCS’ Offshore Oil & Gas campaign see here.
