Join the ARTES Program: Make a Difference in Wildlife Conservation!

Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and ready to tackle the challenges of climate change? The ARTES Program at Fort Sill is looking for driven individuals to help monitor and protect the unique ecosystems of the Southern Great Plains.

In this Individual Placement ARTES program, participants specifically monitors the effects of climate change by monitoring native wildlife species, such as tricolored bat, monarch butterfly, black-capped vireo, and northern bobwhite, and increasing the installation’s resiliency by maintaining, enhancing, and restoring native wildlife habitat to better withstand increased frequency, duration, and intensity of drought, extreme weather, and wildfire events under current climate change scenarios that are expected to impact the Southern Great Plains ecosystem where Fort Sill resides.

As an ARTES Individual Placement, you will:

• Deploy passive acoustic monitors and analyze bat survey data
• Collect and submit Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program (IMMP) data
• Control invasive species, including musk thistle, eastern red cedar, and brown-headed cowbird
• Conduct roadside bobwhite call counts
• Perform other duties as assigned such as roadside herp surveys, ag compliance monitoring, or fish stocking

COMPENSATION (Monthly Living Allowance):

• $2,400 per month ($1,200 biweekly) + End-of-Service AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of service term + Additional $225/week in housing and $3500 in work-related travel

Some that are frequently offered are the American Red Cross Adult First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, the S-212 Wildland Chainsaw Certification (typically only for Crew Leaders), and FEMA Certifications (for crews on disaster response teams).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Frequently required to walk and hike over long distances while carrying tools
• Ability to operate tools
• Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 35-50* pounds (*depending on crew type)
• Walking and working on steep or uneven terrain
• Ability to work long days in adverse weather conditions
• Depending on crew type, ability to hitch, camp, and travel throughout the duration of an entire AmeriCorps term

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED
• Between the ages of 18-35; Ages 21+ for Crew Leaders
• US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
• Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check (NSCHC)
