HAI Postdoctoral Fellow: CRAFT AI Literacy Resources Project, Professor Victor Lee
CRAFT is a curriculum resource repository initiative to leverage the expertise in Stanford’s Graduate School of Education and Institute for Human-centered Artificial Intelligence to develop and provide free curricular materials about AI to high school teachers. The repository hosts materials that are co-designed with educators, connected to one or more existing school subjects, concise, and highly adaptable. The learning emphases are on disciplinary connections, ethical judgments, responsible uses, and accurate conversational understandings of how AI systems work. CRAFT enlists high school teachers from around the United States representing a range of subject areas (e.g., math, science, social studies, art, writing) and demographics to partner in curriculum materials creation and provides an apprentice experience for university undergraduate and graduate students to gain exposure to the unique challenges and opportunities to do work in service of the education system. Research focuses on student and teacher ideas about AI, mechanisms to support learning via concise online materials, and teacher learning and voice in co-design processes. The larger goal of CRAFT is to make high-quality, research-informed, classroom-ready, and continuously updated content necessary for AI literacy to be freely available and a space for educational research.
Mentorship structure
Postdoc will work largely in GSE facilities and be a part of the GSE community which hosts social events, professional development experiences, and guest speakers. They will report to and meet regularly with the PI who will provide professional mentorship and guidance for managing the CRAFT project. They will interact with professional development staff employed at GSE and build relationships within communities including with school districts and county offices of education. Over time, they will learn how to mentor and guide graduate students and undergraduate students. A key goal is to ensure that the postdoc is able to establish some unique projects for subsequent publication or creation of a new research program.
Stanford HAI is also committed to creating a diverse community of scholars who are engaged in contributing to the understanding and advancement of Human-Centered AI. Postdoctoral fellows will have the opportunity to engage with one another and with the broader Stanford HAI research community. They are also expected to participate in professional development, cohort-building, and other programmatic activities organized by HAI.
