Open Space Forestry Technician

Salary: $18.50/hr. – $22/hr. (DOE)

Start Date: May 2025

End Date: September 2025 (Possibility for extension depending on funding & projects)

General Purpose:

The Open Space department is responsible for maintaining 1,200 acres for the Genesee community. Natural resource management along with wildfire mitigation are top priorities for Genesee Open Space. A seasonal technician will assist the Open Space Manager in executing projects on Open Space lands.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to operate trucks, tractors, trailers & UTVs
  • Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in variable weather & road conditions
  • Ability (or willingness to learn how) to operate power tools & heavy equipment including chainsaws, chippers, drills, etc.
  • Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work and hike in a variety of weather conditions at 8000 feet elevation

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Removing flammable vegetation as part of wildfire mitigation plans including the use of chainsaws and chippers.
  • Trails maintenance including the use of hand tools
  • Noxious weed management including the use of hand tools and general use pesticide
  • General maintenance of all equipment
  • Other duties as assigned by the Open Space Manager

Working Conditions:

Work is only outdoors and in all weather conditions.  Work is hands-on and involves heavy lifting (~50lbs or more) and endurance. Workdays always begin at 24425 Currant Drive, Golden, CO. Required work hours are Monday through Thursday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm. Must be able to work July 4th, 2025.

Education & Experience:

  • Training and/or experience with chainsaws preferred
  • Ability to identify Colorado native & non-native plant species is preferred
  • Knowledge of western U.S. restoration techniques, forest management, weed management & fire mitigation is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
  • *Experience with driving and reversing a truck with an attached trailer is given preference
  • *Experience with heavy equipment is given preference
  • *Preference will be given to candidates that can work the full length of the season (May – September)
