The ESG Sustainability Advice and Solutions Department (CEG), supports IFC’s investment, advisory and upstream departments to manage ESG risks associated with their activities and find solutions to client issues based on our Environmental and Social (E&S) Performance Standards (www.ifc.org/performancestandards) and the Corporate Governance Methodology (www.ifc.org/corporategovernance). CEG further leverages this expertise and operational experience in emerging markets to encourage the effective adoption of these standards by companies and investors across emerging markets. IFC is committed to increasing proactivity in management of relationships with CSO community. CEG will lead IFC’s efforts to coordinate and manage CSO relationships, in close collaboration with Communications, CES, regional and industry teams.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Operations Officer CSO engagement will work to build and strengthen IFC’s relationship with civil society organizations, fostering dialogue to strengthen its practices and build support for IFC’s operations and key institutional priorities.
CSO Project Risk Management
• Support project teams in identifying CSO engagement opportunities and monitoring potential E&S CSO related risks in projects throughout the project life-cycle, including through (social) media monitoring
• Develop and implement pro-active CSO relationship management in projects, including through development and implementation of CSO, engagement plans for relevant high-risk projects.
Management Alert and Reporting
• Alert Management and key staff on risks related to CSO activities.
• Provide input on CSO risk into key management review and decision meetings.
• Gather, analyze, and report on key indicators of relevant CSO activity and IFC’s CSO engagement.
CSO Relationship Management
• Map relevant CSOs that IFC engages with in [region] on E&S related issues an ongoing basis; propose and coordinate relevant relationship management strategy.
• Support delivery of CSO engagement events, including during WBG Annual and spring meetings.
Client Support on CSO Engagement
• Develop and implement support tools for clients on development and implementation of CSO engagement methods and strategies.
Staff Capacity Building
• Support the development and delivery of training for E&S and operational staff on CSO engagement methods and strategies.
Selection Criteria
• Master’s degree with over 5 years work experience in social or political science, international relations, development, public affairs, or related field.
• Prior experience working with civil society is essential.
• Knowledge of Environmental and Social Performance Standards and grievance mechanisms.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and manage relationships with critical internal and/or external high-risk constituencies to foster strategic partnerships and to mitigate reputational risk.
• Ability to effectively communicate in challenging situations involving reputational risk.
• Knowledge of and relationship building with civil society organizations and other critical stakeholders in [Region] is strongly preferred.
• Experience with media monitoring, including social media.
• Proven ability to think strategically and rapidly analyze diverse information from varied sources and an ability to learn, adapt, and be innovative as new risks or engagement opportunities arise.
• Self-motivated, creative, excellent organizational skills, proven ability to perform multiple tasks.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with a willingness to work in a team environment.
• Fluency in written and spoken English, and proficiency in another language is a plus.
• Great capacity to diffuse tense situations in a calm and cooperative manner.
• Understanding of MDBs, including the World Bank Group, its policies, and operations; strong understanding of current development topics and issues, including environmental and social sustainability.
