The Opportunity

Join Moonee Valley City Council’s Community Development team as a Project Officer for the Djerring Hub Kitchen and Café Activation and Operations. This role is a unique opportunity to enhance community health and social capital by creating a dynamic, accessible space for food training and preparation. Located in the Djerring Hub in Flemington, the role involves managing the kitchen and café space to ensure it operates safely and efficiently, supporting a variety of community needs, training programs, and events. Your contribution will play a vital role in promoting community engagement and capacity building, particularly for culturally diverse community members.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and refine policies to ensure safe operation of food preparation areas.
  • Manage booking schedules, ensuring all users of the Hub food preparation are appropriately inducted to meet OHS requirements.
  • Supervise kitchen operations, provide training, and support community members in the use of kitchen facilities.
  • Lead a small team, managing rosters and staff duties in line with legislation and Council policies.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts, ensuring compliance with food safety standards.
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Health unit and oversee procurement and food safety adherence.
  • Maintain kitchen equipment and uphold all relevant safety protocols.
  • Represent the Hub at Council events and respond effectively to customer and staff needs.
  • Create and run food related training programs in accordance with Community Development plans. This may include individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Manage procurement and accepting of food from the local suppliers and food rescue agencies in accordance with established processes, while ensuring food is procured in line with program budget.
  • Provide information and advice to clients and community members about the Hub programs as required.
  • Work productively with culturally diverse community members.

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will hold a Certificate III or IV in Commercial Cookery, have substantial experience in a community or corporate kitchen environment, and be accredited as a food safety supervisor. Demonstrated experience working with culturally diverse communities and leading a team in a customer-facing role is essential, as are strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with a range of stakeholders. Proficiency in food safety practices, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive space for community members are also crucial.
