Supervisor: Deputy Director

Compensation: $60,832 to $71,567 (depending on experience); generous benefits include fully paid health & dental insurance with Health Saving Account contributions, a matching Simple IRA retirement plan, 20 days of personal leave per year, 12 days of sick leave per year, 15 paid holidays, and flexibility in work schedules including a four-day work week.

Position Summary:

The organizing director is an energetic and detail-oriented team leader creating and driving engagement and community organizing strategies that build broad-based and targeted support for our organization and priorities. They design and execute campaigns to build power and support policy campaigns. They work with staff, volunteers, supporters, partner organizations, and the general public.

This position provides strategic, supportive leadership to a statewide team of field organizers by establishing a cohesive, positive team approach and leading by example. The organizing director will facilitate learning and problem-solving. They work with policy, communications, and development campaign leads to identify organizing needs and opportunities and manage their team to provide the support necessary for our campaigns to succeed.  They directly oversee the day-to-day operations of field organizers who conduct outreach to communities and individuals, engage in fundraising tactics, build grassroots support, and represent the organization in support of its objectives.

The Organizing Director’s duties and responsibilities support  Wild Montana and Wild Montana Action Fund.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop,  lead, and execute strategies to grow power through engagement organizing.
  • Works with program, communications,  and development staff to develop organizing strategies and tactics to support campaign objectives and manage a team of statewide organizers to carry out identified strategies and tactics.
  • Prioritize and manage workflow for field organizers in support of campaign and organizational objectives. 
  • Provides leadership by establishing a cohesive and positive team approach.
  • Ensures field organizers utilize training opportunities to learn skills necessary to advance campaign goals.
  • Collect, track, and analyze data to evaluate and improve organizational power and organizing effectiveness.
  • Works with staff to develop, implement, and evaluate organizing campaign and program goals and objectives in an annual operations plan. 
  • Supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of work plans and quarterly reports for the team.
  • In coordination with other staff, develop and maintain strategic relationships with partner organizations, coalition members, community leaders, and volunteers to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
  • Leads the team in volunteer recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies and assists in managing chapter board effectiveness.
  • Works with field organizers to ensure chapter functions are supported. 
  • Serves as a spokesperson for Wild Montana when appropriate.
  • Conducts annual reviews of direct reports.
  • Works with staff to develop organizing budgets and manages and tracks expenses, as appropriate. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proven ability to perform the major duties and responsibilities above.
  • Strong management and supervisory skills. 
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful environmental advocacy, public policy, grassroots organizing, and/or public lands issues.
  • Ability to research and maintain a working knowledge of public land issues and organizing strategies, tactics, and tools.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with conservation and community partners.
  • Ability to effectively work with a diverse range of people and groups. 
  • Ability to draft written or visual materials that advance the mission, including policy papers, fact sheets, news releases, alerts, articles, and brochures.
  • Ability to develop and manage program budgets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability and willingness to travel, approximately 25%.
  • Ability and willingness to work nights and weekends regularly.
  • Valid United States issued driver’s license and be insurable.
