The Opportunity

The key purpose of this position is to provide effective and empowering orientation and mobility programs to people with a vision impairment that meet the needs of the individual and comply with See Differently, Orientation and Mobility Association of Australasia (OMAA) and relevant standards of care.

As our Orientation and Mobility Specialist, you will utilise knowledge and skills to provide assessment, training, intervention and service co-ordination to assist in achieving equity and access for people who are blind or have low vision. In this role you will also:

  • Deliver community based independent living services to people who are blind or vision impaired, by performing individualised assessments, preparing client support plans, and providing an appropriate range of vision rehabilitation aids and services.
  • As a member of a multidisciplinary team, in consultation with clients undertake assessments to determine individual capabilities and apply professional expertise to maximise independence and quality of life.
  • Promote and represent See Differently regarding O&M issues with relevant forums and networks.
  • Assess the ability of clients to travel safely and confidently within area of the community they wish to access;
  • Advise on and prescribe a range of mobility aids and provide specialist services to meet individual needs;
  • Monitor and advise on the use of low vision aids as applicable to a mobility program.

Your skills and expertise

  • Qualifications in Orientation and Mobility as recognised by Orientation and Mobility Association Australasia (OMAA)
  • Valid drivers license
  • Knowledge and skills in working with children’s, adults and the elderly
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Experience in training and intervention strategies
  • Relevant worker clearances or willingness to obtain including, NDIS, WWCC, Police Check
