Applications are being accepted for a temporary (5 month, November ’23 -March ’24) contract as an out-planting specialist on a native plant restoration project on the island of Kaua’i. Staff will be a part of a team of botanists and conservation professionals restoring native vegetation within four units in northwest Koke’e State Park.

The goals of the project are to reduce soil erosion within a federal facility, increase native plant abundance within the sites, and protect endangered plants down-slope of the restoration areas. The team will be responsible for installing irrigation, planting a variety of native plants, and constructing a small ungulate fence between the months of November 2023 and March 2024.

The terrain varies from slightly sloped to steep and crumbly. Some areas will require a safety harness while working due to the slope steepness and instability. Crews will be working in moderate to very hot conditions carrying heavy equipment and tools. Staff will be required to take frequent water breaks to prevent overexertion or heat stress.

Experience with either native plant restoration, landscaping, plant propagation, or agriculture is required. Experience with native Hawaiian plants is preferred but not required. Applicants must be able to pass a federal background check to access the worksite. A drivers license is required; however, a work vehicle will be provided for transport to/from the job site. Applicants must be able to carry heavy equipment on steep or uneven terrain, safely operate power tools (2-person auger), and work collaboratively with team members. Weekly schedule will either be 4 days of 10 hours per day or 5 days of 8 hours per day, depending on work phase. Weeks of planting will be 4x10h days. Payment will be biweekly at $30/hour. 50hrs of PTO and 34hrs of sick leave will be accrued over the 5 months. Unused vacation time will be paid out at the end of the completed contract term (to March 31, 2024). Preference is given to applicants residing within the state of Hawai’i; however, all are welcome to apply.
