Dates of Internship: June-August, 2024 (9-12 weeks; flexible dates)

Location: FBC Headquarters at Tidal Falls Preserve, Hancock, ME

Organization Description: Frenchman Bay Conservancy (FBC) is an accomplished land trust with high ambitions for greater land conservation. We have conserved over 14,000 acres of land through fee ownership and conservation easement over the past 36 years. FBC is an accredited 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Hancock, Maine. We have active land conservation, stewardship, and outdoor education programs. Our mission is to conserve distinctive ecosystems, lands and waters in the Union River and Frenchman Bay watersheds east to the Hancock County line.

Position Description: FBC seeks an energetic summer intern to join our team of 7 full-time staff to lead environmental education and outreach programs at our flagship property, Tidal Falls Preserve in Hancock. Tidal Falls Preserve sees thousands of visitors each year, with peak visitation from June-August. The outreach intern will engage with visitors of diverse ages and backgrounds to provide information about the natural phenomenon of the reversing falls, share information about the intertidal ecosystem at the preserve, and provide background on the importance of land conservation in eastern Hancock County. The hours for this position will be flexible, but should overlap with peak visitation. There may be some weekend hours included. Intern will have the opportunity to learn about conservation, gain experience in environmental education, and acquire skills in teamwork, communication, and leadership.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Greeting guests at the Tidal Falls Exploration Center
  • Assist with planning and implementation of public education programs which will take place at the Tidal Falls Preserve
  • Answering visitor questions and connecting them with appropriate resources
  • Engage visitors using Exploration Center materials and resources

Qualifications: 

  • At least one year in a college program focused on environmental studies, environmental education, natural resource management, conservation, or related fields
  • Willingness to work with and teach people of all ages, ranging from young children to senior adults
  • Professionalism when speaking to the public on behalf of FBC
  • A good attitude and a willingness to learn
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs short distances
  • Local housing

Position Benefits: $15/hour for up to 12-week position starting June 2024.
