JOB BRIEF
The Outreach Officer is the lead for the engagement of kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) communities across the United States (U.S.) within the Public Engagement (PE) Team which is rooted in USIP’s founding Congressional Act and longstanding commitment to educating young Americans about our mission and the practice of peacebuilding. This portfolio includes programs for students; the Peace Teachers Program and other educator engagement; and planning and pursuing broader national outreach to schools, teachers, and associations. This position tracks, leverages, and expands USIP’s school relationships in all 50 U.S. states and engages school audiences in broader Civic Engagement and Scholarship (CES) Center and USIP priorities. This position is based in Washington, DC, reports to the Director and is a member of the Civic Engagement and Scholarship Center.
TARGET SALARY
Grade 12 – $99,000 – 102,000
The Institute uses the General Schedule salary tables for administering compensation. Offers are determined based upon candidate qualifications, related experience, internal equity, and the amount budgeted for the position.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management:
* Manages all aspects of the Peace Teachers Program as it expands across the U.S., involving effective engagement of each current cohort, support for the educators’ use of USIP resources, and effective alumni engagement, that includes focus groups and other opportunities to inform USIP’s broader school-based
* Manages national initiatives for student audiences, specifically (but not limited to) the design, piloting, and launch of a new signature scholastic program for secondary students.
* Creates and implements professional development opportunities for educators both onsite, offsite, and through virtual means, and develops effective follow-up plans to expand the program’s national network.
* Leads in developing and updating educational programs, resources, activities and web content for school audiences, including the development of and utilizing evaluation tools to track and enhance outcomes.
* Serves as Contracting Officer Technical Representative for all K-12 related contracts.
Educational Outreach:
* Coordinates with the Senior Outreach Officer to expand Public Engagement’s outreach to K-12 communities across the country, including strategic and targeted outreach plans based on institutional priorities, and including work with partner organizations and networks.
* Leads the planning for attendance at key conferences and events for educators and schools.
* Plays a key role each year in planning, promoting, and expanding the school strategy for the Peace Day Challenge; this includes follow-up with educators and schools to deepen and sustain their engagement.
Communication and Representation:
* Collaborates in developing strategies and plans for communication with teachers and other school-based audiences, including via email, social media, and other tools and platforms.
* Represents the Team and USIP at a range of important venues, including but not limited to educator conferences, individual meetings with education leaders, events in diverse school settings across the U.S. and programs at USIP’s Headquarters.
General Duties:
* Provides input on and engages with all other aspects of PE’s work according to annual plans.
* Contributes to positive and productive internal relationships across all other parts of USIP and to ideas for cross-programmatic collaboration.
* Responsible for supervision of junior staff who support K-12 community engagement.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Bachelor’s degree in education, social or behavioral sciences with six (6) years of related experience in U.S. schools, curriculum development, and/or educator training required.
* Master’s Degree with four (4) years of experience preferred.
* Ability to understand and connect with U.S. teachers and school systems.
* Demonstrated project management skills, from conception through planning, execution, and evaluation.
* Demonstrated leadership skills in defining outreach priorities and strategies, engaging colleagues and stakeholders, and achieving results.
* Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships and strong interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural communication.
* A strong record of innovation, building and maintaining partnerships, and collaboration across diverse audiences.
* Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously, creatively problem-solve, prioritize effectively, and produce results under conditions of uncertainty.
* Excellent representation and communication skills (oral and written), including cross-cultural skills, media skills, and the ability to engage effectively with internal and external partners at all political, social, and economic levels.
