Overnight Expedition Counselor

Join our team at Camp Rocky Farm as an Overnight Expedition Counselor and help create unforgettable experiences for campers in an immersive and fun-filled environment. As an Expedition Counselor, you’ll lead, assist, and support various activities on and off camp. Working with fellow camp staff in a team to serve as a guide, mentor, and facilitator for Girls and gender expansive youth. 

Schedule:  

Staff Training & Preparation Days: July 26th & August 9th  

Expedition 1: White Mountain Explorer: July 27th- August 3rd 

Expedition 2: Berkshire Getaway August 10th-17th 

Close/ Clean Up Camp: August 17th (After Camper Departure) 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Responsible for supporting and carrying out proper expedition equipment use and training for campers to include but is not limited to, fire safety, camp stove use, tent set-up, and jackknife safety, 10 essentials, and Leave No Trace Principles.
• Supervise all aspects of an overnight camper’s day including activities, mealtimes, rest hours, bedtime and after-hour duties as assigned.
• Follow trip itineraries and adheres to the time management of the group
• Work in a team with fellow counselors and administrative staff to ensure successful programming.
• Participate in all aspects of camp life including staff training and meetings, daily activities, songs, kapers (chores), cookouts, etc. as assigned.
• Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of camp and equipment.
• Follows established camp crisis procedures.
• Responsibility for the health and safety of the campers, reporting concerns promptly.
• Keeps records, reports, and inventories as required.
• Adhere to Girl Scout, State of Rhode Island, and American Camp Association standards
• Transport campers in a 15-passenger van
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

• Must be 18 years or older, 21 or older preferred.
• Holds a current First Aid/CPR certification or higher.
• Holds a current driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to communicate with camper caregivers as needed
• Ability to work independently and with a co-leader.
• Must have the visual, auditory, and physical ability to quickly identify and appropriately respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities and emergencies at camp, as well as generally uphold all safety standards.
• Previous experience in implementing outdoor experiences and/ or expeditions required.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements: 

• Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to walk/hike 3-5+ miles per day to include rough and uneven uphill terrain
• Ability to plan, lead, and participate in program activities in a variety of indoor and/or outdoor settings
• Ability to sleep and work in a rustic setting (tent camping).
• Live and work in an outdoor rustic environment with exposure to heat, humidity, sun, rain, uneven terrain and other elements.
