About the job:
This position works in the Natural Resources department to lead and perform maintenance, routine operations park ground natural areas, and implement fire fuel reduction projects. Additionally, this position serves as lead for wildlife responsibilities including game cameras, goose program, and goose volunteer liaison. This position monitors and assesses maintenance of undeveloped natural areas, including riparian areas and species. The Park Maintenance Worker 2 acts as project lead for other employees assisting on associated projects and /or seasonal employees.
A day in the life:
The information provided below encompasses the typical duties and capabilities linked with this classification. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Performs forest health and fire fuels reduction projects throughout District parks and properties. Utilizes chainsaws, chippers, brush mowers, and string trimmers to meet project objectives.
- Leads wildlife management responsibilities, including but not limited to overseeing game cameras, managing the goose program, acting as a liaison for goose volunteers, and communicates with District wildlife partners.
- Leads the work of employees, including training in safe operation of tools and equipment, and providing feedback to employees; participates in work of crews; provides guidance and training in procedures and techniques as needed to ensure quality and quantity of work meets standards.
- Participates in data collection (e.g., Esri applications) activities and utilizes work order software to accurately entering data into the maintenance management system, and electronic filing system for District tracking metrics.
- Coordinates and provides direction on projects and/or programs; assigns work, identifies costs, adheres to project budget; and ensures equipment and supplies are available.
- Coordinates with contractors and acts as a resource in the field. May provide instruction and site-specific details to reduce conflicts and to ensure a safe working environment.
- Purchases materials and supplies; reconciles purchasing statement.
- Assists the Natural Resources Supervisor in reviewing, providing input, and making recommendations on design of park natural areas and development projects; providing input on staff performance, and calculating costs and square footage.
- Maintains park landscape and natural areas, grounds and trails; applies pesticides, performs snow removal and ice control duties; assists in park renovation projects in such areas as carpentry, painting, concrete work, and excavation; assists with set-up, operation, and break-down of special events; maintains equipment in clean and safe condition; operates equipment safely at all times.
- Promotes safe conditions in all park facilities.
- Acts as a Mandatory Reporter; reports incidents of child abuse/neglect.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
What you’ll need for success:
Strong Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices and methods used in forestry, wildlife, ecological restoration, noxious weed control, park maintenance repair, fire fuel reduction, and resource management;
- Maintenance and safe operation of powered equipment, chainsaws and hand tools;
- Effective employee training techniques; general knowledge of effective supervisory practices;
- Basic computer programs and data entry; and
- Basic arithmetic, spelling, English and grammar.
Skill and Ability to:

What We’re Looking For:
Education, Experience, and Training:
- High School diploma or equivalent; AND
- Three (3) years of experience in park maintenance, horticulture and landscaping, natural resources, forest management, irrigation technology, or construction; OR
- Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.
Preferred:
- Biological technician experience relating to wildlife, ecology, and/or silviculture.
- Sawyer experience relating to forest health and fuel reduction.
- Noxious weed management and herbicide application experience
License and Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.
- This position will require possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, a valid Public Pesticide Applicator’s license.
- This position will require chainsaw certification or the ability to obtain upon hiring.
Supervisor received:
Works under the supervision of the Trails Supervisor. Follows standard processes and procedures without supervision but confirms changes to standard practices and significant decision in advance.
Working conditions:
The following are working conditions, including environmental and physical demands, required for this classification.
- Duties are performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather including heat, cold, humidity, wind, snow, and rain.
- Exposure to various hazardous chemical, fumes, and high noise levels.
- Daily standing and walking over uneven terrain, such as parks and trails with up/down inclines, paved and unpaved surfaces for sustained periods of time.
- Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves, reflective vests and eye protection are required.
- Daily operation of a motor vehicle on public roadways.

- Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching.

- May require working for emergency call-outs or snow removal during off duty hours including some holidays.
