Part-Time Educator

The NESS Educator helps the New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) achieve its goal of world-class instruction through innovative programming and partnerships. As part of NESS’s team of program staff, NESS Educators use experiential-based learning to guide students on their personal journeys of discovery. This position’s main role is to implement NESS’s high-quality programs while maintaining NESS’s strong culture of safety. This is a great opportunity for a passionate, motivated individual to be an integral part of this vibrant organization. Programs may include academic year classes, homeschool programs, and summer programs, primarily for Pre-K-12 students on and around the water. The Educator must have proven skills working with students, be motivated, be self-starting, and be able to work within a team, as well as on their own. This part-time, non-exempt position reports to a NESS Director.

The NESS Educator

• Provides students with engaging experiential and hands-on lessons that are unique and aligned with the NESS education philosophy and principles.
• Promotes NESS’s four core values in all aspects of programming: inclusiveness, experiential learning, personal growth, and stewardship.
• Serves as an ambassador for NESS when dealing with NESS’s constituents and exhibits customer service skills.
• Exhibits a strong culture of safety as it pertains to on-the-water safety, medical training, and emotional safety.
• Is comfortable working with all age groups and abilities and is open to learning how to better serve all students.
• Can operate with a high degree of awareness and knowledge related to assigned responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Implement programs:

• Teach academic year and, summer programs following NESS lessons in varying learning environments; this could include in the field, on a boat, or at a partner school or organization.
• Undergo periodic Program Quality Assessments to continuously improve inquiry-based teaching skills
• Implement NESS’s Safety Plan and Emergency Action Plan, as needed
• Always maintain campus and offsite safety
• Assist NESS’s outcome measurement efforts as they pertain to student growth

Education/Certifications:

• Experience in or Interest in teaching STEM and related fields or leading inquiry-based learning programs
• USCG OUPV 6-Pack License or greater a plus (may be able to obtain at NESS)
• ARC Waterfront Lifeguarding (preferred)
• First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (Youth and Adults) (may be able to obtain at NESS)
• Must have a valid Driver’s License & your own reliable transportation

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

• Experience in some of the following: swimming, kayaking, powerboating, sailing (dinghies and keelboats), surfing, fishing
• Effective communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
• Experience working with students of all ages and abilities
• Strong team player and an excellent motivator

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; crouch; walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Schedule:

• This is a part-time position. Hours will vary and are not guaranteed week to week. The NESS Educator’s schedule is solely based on programming demands.
• Must be available weekends and evenings
