Part-time IMRF Forestry Assistant

Under the supervision and direction of the FT Parks Forester, the Part-time Forestry Assistant is responsible for caring for the park district tree canopy and assisting with ongoing ecological restoration and park maintenance projects. Occasionally, they may need to assist with environmental outreach and education. The individual must be able to work well independently with little supervision and as a team member on a crew. Duties will include, but are not limited to, basic tree care such as pruning, planting trees and other plant material, invasive plant control, PHC applications, operation of equipment including mowers, chippers, stump grinders, chainsaws, and other hand tools, collecting, cleaning, and distributing native seeds, landscape bed maintenance, leading volunteer groups, driving a truck with a trailer, assisting with snow removal, and other duties as assigned by supervisors. Some weekends and evenings are required. This is an at-will position.

  • The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, passionate, and demonstrate a strong interest in arboriculture and the natural environment.
  • The individual must be 18 years of age or older with a high school degree or equivalent.
  • A degree in or currently pursuing environmental science or biology is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of common Midwest tree and shrub species, as well as native grasses and forbs.
  • A minimum of two years of experience performing horticultural, conservation, or tree-related activities is preferred.
  • Possess or obtain a valid IL Pesticide Operator license within three months of hire.
  • A valid IL driver’s license is required with Class C designation or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Must be in good physical condition to perform manual labor with the ability to lift 50 lbs. and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Experience working with and/or directing volunteers is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public, patrons, volunteers, and partners.
  • Familiarity with the Glen Ellyn area is helpful.
  • Will be required to pass a post-offer criminal background check.
