Position description

NYU’s Washington, DC Academic Center is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate course, “American Public Opinion & Pressure Groups.” The course will be under the sponsorship of the Department of Politics in the College of Arts and Science. NYU is committed to providing a campus community that reflects and enacts the values of inclusion, diversity, belonging, and equity that inform academic excellence.

The course is expected for Fall 2024 (late August to early December). The class meeting pattern for this 4 credit course will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute office hour per instruction day, during which the instructor will be available to meet with students.

The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Using Washington, DC as a learning tool (e.g., a guest speaker, an excursion) is an expectation for the course. The course is intellectually challenging in content, and requires rigorous student assessment. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share NYU Washington, DC’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at our site.

Course Description

The course examines the origins of public opinion research, as well as the impact it has on news coverage, political campaigns, public discourse, elected officials, and, in many cases, public policy outcomes. It considers how political actors use public opinion to affect politics, policy and business. Instructors are encouraged to invite political professionals from both political parties, congressional staffers, journalists, and others who can share their insights with students. Students will also be assigned readings from the established literature in public opinion research, and apply this work to real-life examples. Students should come to understand how research instruments are designed, fielded, weighted and interpreted; how they are used in election campaigns; and how they can help to solve business or public policy challenges.
