JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Academic Affairs is seeking a diverse team of aspiring undergraduate student leaders to serve as New Student Orientation (NSO) & Welcome Conference Leaders for Summer 2024. NSO Leaders play a key role in providing quality transitional experiences for all incoming first-year students through an in-person New Student Orientation experience (starting June 13), and a Welcome Conference (on August 23). This role is best suited for a student who has regional housing options during the summer. McKeesport Hall will not be open this summer.
Job Duties
Providing general assistance with the college transition by facilitating small group discussions on subjects including involvement on campus, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, personal responsibility, and responsible decision making.
Orientation Leaders must work cooperatively within a team of fellow student leaders to accomplish tasks, respond to questions from students and families about university life using personal experiences in a professional manner, and encourage students to establish meaningful connections with other first-year students.
Orientation Leaders must be able to be flexible, patient, and quick on their feet as NSO is a demanding and fast-paced work environment.
Orientation Leaders are expected to actively engage with students and families while providing a welcoming environment for all new Penn Staters.
Orientation Leaders must attend the campus Welcome Conference on Friday, August 23rd, serve as campus ambassadors for the event, and take part in a student and alumni panel discussion open to all first-year students students.
Orientation Leaders will be trained in how to help their fellow students clear basic holds, review the academic bulletin, and understand basic university systems such as LIONPATH, CANVAS and STARFISH.
This position opening eight orientation dates (June 13, 20 and 27; July 10, 15, 19; August 7 and 21; and Welcome Conference (August 23). Workdays are 8 hours in length with a 7:45 a.m. start time for orientation and 8:30 a.m. start time for the conference. The pay is $12/hour.
Requirements and Qualifications
Orientation Leaders will be required to complete a commitment form that outlines their responsibilities as well as reviews what dates the student may not be available during the 2024 NSO Season.
