Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Part of the Strategic Partnerships Division, the Private Sector Partnerships (PSP) Section leads UN Women’s engagement with the private sector, corporations, philanthropy, foundations, and individuals – both in terms of a substantive components and resource mobilization – and it drives a wide range of UN Women’s global initiatives: HeForShe, Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) and the Unstereotype Alliance (UA). It also leads the work with all UN Women National Committees, and the development of individual/digital giving as well as Advisory Services business line for private sector. PSP’s main aims are to ensure that UN Women develops and sustains high quality and impact focused partnerships to achieve maximum results for gender equality and women’s empowerment and mobilize resources for UN Women. 

Under the general direction and guidance of the Chief of PSP, Partnerships Engagement and Special Initiatives Advisor, is specifically responsible for:

  • Driving linkages across UN Women’s private sector engagements, partnership management and resource mobilization with a focus on the intersected partner performance and deliverables as per UN Women Private Sector Engagement Strategy and UN Women Strategic Plan;
  • Development of the strategic direction for and direct management of the UN Women’s HeForShe initiative;
  • Managing daily implementation and development of UN Women’s due diligence policies and procedures; and
  • Managing staff and budgets.

 

Key Functions and Accountabilities:

Oversee the growth and management of partnership engagement and resource mobilization

  • Provide analytical thinking in identifying strategic priorities and opportunities for engagement with private sector, including for the purpose of resource mobilization.
  • Grow and manage partnership engagement with an aim to achieve results for women and girls by maximizing income and influence from the private sector as well as influencing their internal change, in line with UN Women Private Sector Engagement Strategy and UN Women Strategic Plan.
  • Support aligned and direct engagement approach between private and public sectors to leverage results for women and girls locally and globally.
  • Provide direct guidance to UN Women HQ, Regional and Country Offices on engagement with private sector, including partnership development, resource mobilization and implementation of UN Women’s policies and procedures.
  • Develop, strengthen, and maintain partnerships across UN system on engaging with the private sector for gender equality to enhance support to their work with private sector on gender equality programs.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the PSP Chief and UN Women Senior Management Team on identifying and evaluating potential private sector partners based on their alignment with UN Women’s goals, values, and priorities, opportunities and risks associated.

 

Management and implementation of the HeForShe initiative

  • Lead development of strategic direction of the HeForShe initiative across UN Women, growth of its public and private sector partnerships, knowledge management and advocacy, as well as its engagement with governments, UN agencies, academic institutions, and civil society organizations.
  • Work closely with UN Women regional and country offices to advance impact and achieve goals of the HeForShe initiative and ensure its effective inclusion across all UN agencies.
  • Lead partnership growth, management, and resource mobilization for implementation of HeForShe strategy and its goals and objectives.
  • Lead inter-agency coordination to achieve a coherent and aligned presence for HeForShe, including identifying synergies with UN Women’s policy and programme work on engaging men and boys in support of gender equality.
  • Ensure that knowledge generated from the work with HeForShe and other relevant work with partners is captured, analyzed, and shared with UN Women teams, UN System, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversee development of workplans, implementation, monitoring and reporting on all HeForShe programmes and activities.

Oversee due diligence operations

  • Oversee implementation of UN Women private sector related due diligence policies and procedures.
  • Oversee development and monitor the use of relevant due diligence systems that support UN Women’s effective partnership planning and engagement.
  • Ensure that UN Women teams have sufficient information, guidance, training, tools and support to plan and deliver private sector partnership engagement in line with UN Women’s partnership engagement policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance of all due diligence and partnership implementation services, including third party assessment, donor agreements and donor reporting, according to rules, regulations, processes and procedures and UN Women accountability framework.
  • Work closely with all relevant UN Women teams to analyze and identify any potential risks arising from analysis of due diligence findings within the process of partnership engagement and as/if needed, provide advice to Chief and Senior Management on proposed steps to address them.

 

Management 

  • Provide substantive and strategic contributions on private sector engagement to PSP Section and UN Women corporate processes such as development of strategies, bi-annual work planning, relevant reporting, etc.
  • Participate actively in the work of the PSP Section Management Team and work closely with all section’s teams to ensure strong linkages between all areas of work in the section aiming to grow private sector partnership engagement opportunities and mobilize resources.
  • Review donor and other substantive reports for quality assurance and compliance with commitment met and accountability framework established and to ensure that donors are duly informed on a timely basis
  • Manage the performance of personnel under their supervision by provide managerial direction, guidance and leadership as well as performance feedback and coaching.
  • Ensure performance assessment are completed on time and identify learning and development opportunities to support personnel’s engagement.
  • Ensure all personnel under their supervision are fully aware of UN Women’s workplace relations policies.
  • Manage budget as relevant.

 

The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organisation. 

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities: 

The incumbent leads a team of 10, which includes 5 direct reports (5 P staff), as well as currently 5 affiliate personnel (SC, consultants, and interns).

Functional Competencies:

  • Proven and substantive experience and background in human rights based and gender responsive approaches to working with private sector.
  • Substantive knowledge of human right based approach strategy development and implementation.
  • Proven positive team management of more than 5 people and multiple teams at the same time.
  • Excellent people management and team building skills.
  • Experience in design of performance management goals, targets and monitoring processes.
  • Proven management of budgets over $500,000.
  • Demonstrated negotiating, cultural sensitivity and diplomatic skills.

Education and certification:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in international relations, social sciences, human rights, or related field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

 

Experience:

  • At least 10 years of extensive development experience in partnerships management/development and resource growth is required.
  • Experience in managing complex partnerships, developing and implementing capacity-building programs, and advocacy initiatives is required.
  • Experience leading and coaching staff in international settings is required.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and spreadsheet and database packages, experience in handling of web-based management systems is required.
  • Experience in the use of a modern web-based ERP System, preferably Oracle Cloud, is desirable.
  • Experience working on issues of gender equality and empowerment of women is desirable.
  • Experience working in the UN system is desirable.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required.
  • Proficiency in other UN languages is an advantage (French, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese or Russian).
