Job Summary
The Patient and Family Educator will be responsible for:

  • Providing information and guidance on obtaining resources available through outside agencies, within BCH, and web based resources to families of children with a range of neurodevelopmental disabilities including children newly diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Following up with families regarding clinician recommendations
  • Working collaboratively and participating actively with other Patient and Family Educators (PFEs) at BCH including those at the Brain Mind Behavior Center and the Autism Spectrum Center (ASC) to develop and update education materials for patients and their families
  • Establishing culturally and linguistically appropriate parent-to-parent support programs for families of children diagnosed with developmental disabilities (in collaboration with a range of provider and parent groups)
  • Maintaining ongoing communication with agencies in order to review services available and obtain information. Collaborating with other PFEs to develop and maintain resource files and related information (RedCap database). Ensuring that there is updated electronic information available for clinicians to share with families
  • Recording resource assistance provided in Power Chart
  • Preparing correspondence, and other materials as needed
  • Participating in DMC Grand Rounds and other appropriate operational meetings
  • Participating in selected workgroups aligned with Division strategic plan
  • Providing updates to faculty and fellows on new resource or change in laws affecting DMC families
  • Collaborating with resource specialists, and other staff (housed in different departments across the hospital and in different Mass. area hospitals) to ensure coordinated and standardized supports are provided to families with neurodevelopmental disabilities
  • Coordinating with intake coordinators, social work, and other departments to expand resource support for all families, including resources in other languages

To qualify, you must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology or closely related field or a Master of Arts in Psychology, Developmental, Counseling, Educational Psychology, or M. Ed in Counseling/Psychology preferred
  • One year of professional experience with pediatric patients/school age and families with the knowledge of resources in the community useful for patients and families. Three plus years of this experience is preferred
  • Prior experience working with children with neurodevelopmental disabilities is highly preferred
  • Strong critical thinking and communication skills; as well as strong organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving skills and the ability to make independent decisions
  • The ability to establish rapport with patients and families from a variety of cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds
