Position Title: Recreation Trail Crew AmeriCorps Member

Position Summary:

Payette National Forest Krassel Ranger District is recruiting one 680-hour Trail Crew AmeriCorps Members beginning May through September 2024. The incumbent will perform trail work construction and maintenance of motorized and non-motorized trails. Incumbent will safely utilize hand tools in trail maintenance, power equipment including chainsaws, brush saws, weed whackers, and motorized trail bikes. Trail clearing and maintenance of up to 10 or more miles per day.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This placement is with the Payette National Forest’s Krassel Ranger District. Ninety percent (90%) of the incumbent’s time will entail working as a crew member on a self-contained backpacking crew that performs light and heavy maintenance on the district system trails, including logout and tread repair. Ten percent (10%) of the incumbent’s time will be office work such as logging fieldwork data entry.

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous backpacking, hiking and camping experience required.
  • Perform strenuous physical work outdoors.
  • Hike long distances carrying a heavy pack and tools.
  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor on an everyday basis
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Willingness to learn and work as part of a team in an outdoor setting
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools

Desired Qualifications:

  • Positive mental attitude.
  • Willingness to learn new things.
  • Comfortable living and working in the Wilderness for up to 10 days at a time.
  • Experience reading maps and attention to detail
  • Coursework in recreation management, forestry, natural resources, or related field
  • A strong interest in resource management and the care of their public lands.

Duty Location:

Members are stationed at Krassel Work Center in central Idaho. Government housing may be provided. Duties are carried out in a variety of locations in the Krassel Ranger District.

Terms of Employment:

One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May through September 2024. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits:

$7,650 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements (680-hours), $2626.27 education award. This position also includes a gear funding stipend of $201.19.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
