Dienste in Übersee gGmbH (DÜ) sucht seit gut 60 Jahren Entwicklungshelferinnen und Entwicklungshelfer für Partnerorganisationen von Brot für die Welt. Zudem vermittelt DÜ in Vorbereitung und Begleitung relevantes Wissen und praktische Fähigkeiten für die interkulturelle Tätigkeit mit den Menschen.

Dienste in Übersee gGmbH (DÜ) has been looking for development workers for partner organisations of Bread for the World for a good 60 years. DÜ selects these ecumenically and developmentally committed professionals according to standardised procedures, trains them in intensive preparation for the service lasting several weeks and accompanies them during their time abroad and after their return.

Bread for the World is the worldwide development agency of the Protestant churches in Germany. In more than 90 countries around the globe, the organisation empowers poor and marginalised people to improve their living conditions through their own efforts. Bread for the World works closely with local, often church-based partner organisations.

DÜ is one of the seven organisations in Germany recognised by the German Development Aid Act (EhfG). With a contract according to the EhfG, professionals receive social security coverage according to German standards abroad. In addition, DÜ imparts relevant knowledge and practical skills for intercultural work with people in preparation and accompaniment.

Background and Partner Organisation

The Civil Peace Service (ZFD) is a programme for violence prevention and peacebuilding in crisis and conflict regions. ZFD professionals provide long-term support to local people in their commitment to dialogue, human rights and peace.

More than 60% of Sierra Leone’s population is under 35 years old, and youth unemployment is a pressing problem. The Sierra Leone Opportunities Industrialization Centre (SLOIC), founded in 1977, is a nationally known vocational training provider that gives disadvantaged young people new opportunities to earn their own income. SLOIC provides a wide range of vocational training – including carpentry, bricklaying, agricultural extension, IT services (IT systems management), fashion designing and hairdressing. Additionally, psychosocial counselling helps to develop the young people’s individual potential and improves their participation in social and political life in Sierra Leone.

You will live in Bo (the provincial capital of Southern Province) with occasional trips to branches in Mattru Jong (Southern Province), Makeni (Northern Province) and Lungi (Northwestern Province). The location is currently not advisable for families with young children.

 

Job Scope

You support SLOIC using participatory methods to expand and professionalise the existing psychosocial counselling services for the trainees.

In more detail, you would be responsible for the following:

  • Needs assessment and context-adapted concept and strategy development for psychosocial counselling work with young people.
  • Selection and testing of suitable creative methods of psychosocial work with young people.
  • Conducting trainings for SLOIC staff in methods of psychosocial counselling work with young people (e.g. techniques to avoid secondary trauma).
  • Improvement of methods for supervision, monitoring and evaluation of the psychosocial counselling work carried out.
  • Participatory development of methods for knowledge management (e.g. creation of training videos and/or guidelines)

  

Profile

  • You have a relevant university degree (at least Bachelor), e.g. in psychology, social pedagogy or vocational pedagogy with additional qualification in psychotherapy, developmental/adolescent psychology and/or trauma psychology.
  • Creative methods characterise your pedagogical work with young people
  • You enjoy finding constructive solutions even under difficult conditions, and passing on your knowledge
  • You have successfully tested your very good English skills in practice, preferably in an intercultural context

 

Professionals who are seconded with Dienste in Übersee sign a code of conduct with their contract and commit themselves in particular to child protection and protection against sexualised violence. Through the complaints mechanism of the Evangelisches Werk für Diakonie und Entwicklung (EWDE), the EWDE child protection team follows up on reports of violations of the code of conduct. The EWDE child protection team also takes preventative action.

Citizenship of a Member State of the European Union or Switzerland is required.
