What we want
The staff pharmacist is responsible for the supervision and management of the Small Animal Pharmacy and the pharmacy services provided primarily to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Small Animal Clinic. Services are also provided to other College of Veterinary Medicine and University departments. The staff pharmacist will assume responsibility for the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Large Animal Clinic in the absence of the Director of Pharmacy. The staff pharmacist s duties are classified under three primary functions: pharmacy management/supervision, clinical services, and teaching.

Other Requirements or Other Factors: Moderate moving required. May be required to cover or take emergency call, on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.
Required Education:
Doctor of Pharmacy or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience:
Two years of related experience in pharmacy.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
Eligibility for licensure in Texas
Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong supervisory, management, and interpersonal skills. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
Registered Pharmacist in Texas. Pharmacist Preceptor Certificate.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Interest in teaching and in clinical skills.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Services: Provides products and services for the Veterinary Teaching Hospitals and Clinics. Determines the product inventory maintained in the pharmacy. Manages this inventory by providing: inventory audits, storage, security, monitoring, emergency orders, product rotation, expiration date control, new product additions, obsolete product deletions, controlled substance accountability, and quality control. Manages the distribution of pharmacy products in an orderly, efficient, safe, and accurate manner. Oversees and participates in the filling of prescriptions and hospital supply requests, as well as labeling and compounding of pharmacy products. Establishes quality control procedures that ensure the accuracy of all prescriptions leaving the pharmacy. Encourages and participates in regular and open communications with faculty, staff, and students. Maintains a visible and active presence in the pharmacy. Provides drug information and product information. Works with outside pharmacies to transfer prescriptions, information, and refill requests to provide continuity of patient care.
Pharmacy Management/Supervision: Supervises Pharmacy Technicians in the Small Animal Pharmacy. Interviews, trains, schedules, evaluates performance, motivates, and leads pharmacy support staff. Maintains contact with outside agencies that impact pharmacy operations. Adheres to guidelines, rules, and regulations mandated by State and Federal regulatory agencies. Periodically reviews operations and recommends modifications and new services as needed. Performs other pharmacy-related duties as directed by the Pharmacy Director.
Teaching: Assists with teaching programs as encouraged. Possible related activities include one-on-one interactions with students, regular attendance at clinical rounds, and instruction on prescription writing, drug regulations, drug interactions, dispensing, and compounding. Actively maintains professional competency by attending and participating in continuing education programs. Is an active member of the Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists and other professional organizations. Participates in clinical research as time and interest permit. Performs other duties as assigned.
