Job description
The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Social Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Education, Department of Education and Sport Science. The position is vacant from August 2024.
This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development through a PhD education leading to a doctoral degree.
The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Educational Sciences and the Humanities. The education includes relevant courses amounting to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. Read more about the PhD education at UiS on our website.
The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively, or four years with both research and 25% required duties. This will be clarified in the recruitment process.
Research topic
The PhD Fellow will be affiliated with the following project:
«Documenting immigrant voices of the past and present: a memory bank for the future». In this migration-related project, life stories will be documented from immigrants who have moved to Norway. The goal of the research project that the candidate will be a part of is to create a memory bank that documents life experiences, memories, and voices from various immigrant communities, age groups (children to adults), backgrounds, and time periods (e.g., immigrants from Pakistan in the 1970s, Vietnam in the 1980s, Bosnia/old Yugoslavia in the 1990s, North Africa/Middle East, and EEA migrant workers from the 2000s up to today’s Ukrainian refugees). As part of this project, the PhD candidate will be able to explore what immigrants’ lived experiences tell us about Norwegian society from a minority perspective – with a particular focus on life experiences, challenges, contributions, and support systems.
The project also uses an inclusive research methodology where participants will be invited to participate in the editing and storage of their own stories through minority-focused community-based participatory research methods such as testimonies, photovoice, and digital storytelling.
The goal of the project is to better understand the lived experiences of immigrants and elevate the voices of minorities so that they can tell their own stories – stories that are often silent or marginalized. Preserving such memories is also relevant to preserve and share, so they can contribute to shaping perceptions and “histories” of minorities meeting the majority.
There is a need to develop educational and research initiatives that facilitate the participation and inclusion of minorities and counteract feelings of prejudice, exclusion, and discrimination.
Project proposal
As an applicant, you must prepare a preliminary project proposal for a doctoral project within the subject area, which explains the problem, relevance, theoretical and methodological approach. Your preliminary project proposal will be included in the application assessment.
During the first three months of the employment period, the project proposal and progress plan will be further developed in cooperation with your supervisors and completed for the final plan for the PhD-project. A project proposal template can be found here.
The proposal must be a maximum of one page.
