Offer Description
The Department of Computer Science has a vacant PhD Fellowship position within the field of visualization of quantum theory. The project is a novel and innovative research collaboration that combines technology and art and is a newly established collaboration between the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Art, Design and Drama. The successful applicant will be affiliated with the Mathematical Modeling group and the newly established OsloMet Quantum Hub. In addition, work within the project will be carried out closely with various local, national, and international collaborators.
Area of research
Quantum theory is a branch of physics that describes the behavior of matter and energy at the smallest scales, such as electrons in atoms and molecules. This theory provides a framework for understanding the fundamental nature of the universe, including the properties of matter, energy, and their interactions.
Quantum literacy refers to a basic understanding of the principles of quantum mechanics. A person who is quantum literate has a rudimentary understanding of the key concepts and phenomena of quantum mechanics, such as superposition, entanglement, and quantum tunnelling. By understanding the principles of quantum mechanics, individuals can better appreciate the importance and the role that science and technology play in the society. Enhancing visual understanding of quantum mechanics is an interesting research field in itself. Moreover, visualization is an important aspect of quantum mechanics, and is something that has been around since its early days. For example, chemists think in terms of “orbitals”, and diagrammatic drawings in the form of Goldstone diagrams is used in different sub-fields of quantum mechanics.
The overall objective of the research project is to investigate how to further the understanding of quantum mechanics to researchers, students and the general public and investigate how different audiences respond to different visualization techniques, and how these techniques can be optimized to enhance learning and understanding with focus on the importance of visualizations on learning outcomes. The PhD project aims at developing new visualization techniques for illustrating the effects of, e.g., exchange, correlation, entanglement, superposition, tunnelling and “chemical bonds”, just to mention some possible examples. By combining artistic innovation and contemporary art dissemination strategies, one can experiment with varied formats aimed at different target groups. VR technologies, for instance, gives possibilities of interactivity and engagement on different levels. Public engagement with scientific results has become more important in international research, and we find numerous projects in what is sometimes named the SciArt field. In Norway, this is still not well developed, with the FeLT project being an important exception.
The successful applicant’s primary duty is to carry out and publish research connected to the above described aims as well as the dissemination of such results. The preferred candidate should have good knowledge of quantum mechanics/quantum theory and be able to write and understand computer codes in, for example, Python. Experience and/or strong motivation to work with visualization, pedagogical and/or SciArt aspects of quantum mechanics is desirable. The position involves working closely with researchers in quantum theory, for example with team members of the quantum project REGAL hosted within the OsloMet Quantum Hub.
The candidate is also welcomed to contributes to the public outreach activities of the Quantum Hub. This could, e.g., involve giving seminars at summer/winter schools and public dissemination work.
The position is advertised as a 3-year position with 100% research, or a 4-year position with 75% research and 25% other tasks (teaching, supervision and/or administrative work). The goal must be to complete the PhD program/degree within the decided time frame. The decision on a 3- or 4-year position will be discussed as part of the interviews in the hiring process. The start date of the position is 01.10.2024 at the latest.
