Offer Description

Shape the future of equality in the workplace! Unlock the complexities of labor market outcomes of LGBT migrants in this PhD position.

Your job
The department of Sociology has a job opening for a PhD candidate interested in labour market outcomes of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) migrants. Despite significant progress in recognising the rights of LGBT people, they are still treated unequally in the labour market. Although about 18 million people in the EU identify as LGBT, one out of five felt discriminated against at work specifically due to being LGBT. Previous research has documented that this discrimination results in lower productivity, earnings, and the probability of employment for LGBT people. However, due to data unavailability, these studies have typically ignored heterogeneity within the LGBT population by migration background. Yet, increased international migration and legal recognition of LGBT people have led to a sizeable population of LGBT migrants in recent years (about 10,000 LGBT migrants in the Netherlands). Therefore, studying LGBT migrants provides a unique opportunity to gain theoretical insights into how migration background intersects with gender identity. Using quasi-experimental methods on administrative population data from Statistics Netherlands, the project aims to answer four central questions:

  • What is the role of having both an LGBT identity and migration background for the probability of employment and earnings from labour?
  • Are labour market outcomes of LGBT individuals with a migration background conditioned by the extent to which occupations are male-dominated or female-dominated?
  • To what extent does the regional level of urbanisation explain the labour market performance of LGBT individuals with a migration background?
  • How have labour market outcomes for LGBT individuals with a migration background changed over time?
  • As a PhD candidate, your work involves conducting research resulting in international scientific publications, and presenting at international conferences. You will also participate in methodological training and gain experience with teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. You will be embedded in the Interuniversity Centre for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS) Graduate School .
