Job Description

Join us in the fight against cancer and help us take clinical AI to the next level. If you are interested in AI, uncertainty quantification and interpretability, this is your chance. You will be part of a team with partners from hospitals and industry that will create a decision support tool for dermatologists.
The research on uncertainty quantification and interpretability is crucial for clinical AI and will have applications far beyond this project.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your important tasks in the project will be quantifying the uncertainty in an AI model for skin lesion diagnostics, and making it interpretable. This will happen in collaboration with the company Melatech, from which we have a very large anonymized database of skin lesions with diagnosis. Based on the actual performance of doctors we will also investigate their skill and bias and the difficulty of specific lesions.
Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Research on AI models using metric learning for classification and measuring similarity of samples.
  • Research on uncertainty quantification in classification models based on metric learning
  • Research on interpretability by extending Concept Bottleneck models
  • Relate embedding properties to user skill, bias and difficulty of lesions
  • Coordinate and validate models with clinical partners and Melatech
  • Conduct rigid statistical testing of your models in a clinical environment
  • Write scientific papers and present research results at top conferences
  • Work as a teaching assistant in two or three 5 ECTS modules

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
Approval and Enrolment

DTU Compute is Denmark’s largest environment for mathematics and computer science. DTU Compute’s management consists of acting department director and deputy director Jan Madsen, and 10 research section leaders. The department consists of 10 research sections, several centres and a management secretariat. In our  brochure  you can get a peep into our world. DTU Compute embraces both the deep theory and the practical applications. It enables us to pass on new ideas to innovative products for the benefit of business and public institutions. We take problems and challenges from other disciplines and lift them into a virtual world where we can make models, calculations and simulations. The results of this work we can lead back to the real world and thus solve a wide range of problems. All engineering students must go through our department as part of their education at DTU. At the same time, we train many engineers who become specialists in our specific areas. Together with our students, we create knowledge and innovation so that we can develop the society of the future.
Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
