Job Description

If you aim at scientific excellence and want to establish a career as a scientist within fiber lasers and supercontinum sources and their high-level applications within imaging and spectroscopy, then we have the ideal opportunity for you. Come and be a part of the “Table-Top Synchrotron” project and one of the world’s strongest groups in this field in our quest to develop supercontinuum sources that outcompete synchrotrons from the deep ultraviolet (deep-UV) down to 33 nm to the mid-infrared (mid-IR) up to 15 µm.
To cover this enormous bandwidth we are developing 4 new all-fiber supercontinuum sources, or beamlines. The UV beamline 1 is based on gas-filled hollow-core silica fibers and meta-surfaces and will cover 33-1100 nm, extending the record 113 nm UV edge to 33 nm. The near-IR beamline 2 is based on solid-core silica photonic crystal fibers covering 400-2400 nm and will use so-called all-normal dispersion (ANDi) fibers pumped with femtosecond lasers to achieve record low noise for spectroscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging applications. The same technology will be used for the low-noise beamline 3 covering 1-5 µm using commercial fluoride fiber. Beamline 4 will push the record IR edge in all-fiber mid-IR supercontinuum sources to 15 µm by using chalcogenide soft-glass fibers, in particular in-house fabricated sulfide, selenide, and telluride fibers.
Responsibilities and qualifications
This PhD study will focus on the development of beamlines 2-3, i.e., using coherent ANDi supercontinuum generation pumped with ultra-short femtosecond fiber lasers. You will be in charge of developing both the femtosecond pump lasers and the supercontinuum sources, and you will be part of the team implementing these sources in our in-house developed spectroscopy and OCT systems for cutting-edge applications within imaging and trace gas detection.
We therefore require you to have experimental qualifications within fiber optics and fiber lasers and to document a drive to build things yourself.
You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU’s rules for the PhD education .
Assessment
The assessment of the applicant will be made by Professor Ole Bang and by the DTU PhD Council.

We are seeking a PhD candidate to conduct experimental research in optical frequency combs and ultrafast lasers operating beyond 2 µm wavelength. The goal is to develop a new class of compact frequency comb devices for molecular sensing, which will contribute to a larger context, such as climate change, by providing a solution for real-time and precise detection of crucial greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

  • PhD scholarship in Bluelight Thin-Film Lithium Niobate-on-Insulator Integrated Photonics Platform for BlueArray under Water Communication – DTU Electro

    Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark

    Posted on 02/05/2024

Blue-light thin-film lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) integrated photonics platform will be utilized for future optical phased array (OPA) – based underwater communication. The PhD project is part of the European Innovation Commission (EIC) Pathfinder programme project ‘BlueArray: Integrated blue light phased arrays enabling underwater optical wireless networks: towards a new era of Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT)’. The IoUT, an extension of Internet of Things (IoT) to the underwater environment, would represent a technological revolution for building the future smart ocean, where underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) using blue-green light is considered to be the key technology for real-time high-speed communications. Thin-film LNOI photonics is extremely promising for the UOWC application given its high transparency at blue-green light wavelength, high electro-optical coefficient, and low loss, allowing OPA-based underwater communications in a high speed.
