  • Department of Mathematics
  • Full time, fixed term position at our Hawthorn campus
  • Annual stipend starting at $29,880 p.a. and incremented annually

About the Scholarship
We have an exciting PhD scholarship opportunity funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project “Transformative simulation techniques for complex polymer networks”, under the supervision of Dr Nathan Clisby.

This project will involve the development of radically efficient algorithms for Monte Carlo simulation of long-chain polymer systems, building on prior work by Dr Clisby on the pivot algorithm for self-avoiding walks. The successful candidate will develop techniques that they can be applied to wickedly difficult but physically important problems such as polymer knots and links, and the study of polymers with branched structures.

The role is located at Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus and will have the opportunity to collaborate with world-class researchers involved in the Discovery Project, namely Dr Nicholas Beaton of The University of Melbourne, Professor Thomas Prellberg of Queen Mary University of London, and Professor Andrew Rechnitzer of the University of British Columbia.

About you
To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Either a Bachelors degree with honours or a Master’s degree, in mathematics, physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with writing computer code.
  • Background knowledge in a field that is related to the project, such as polymer physics, statistical mechanics, or discrete mathematics.
  • Preferably, experience writing high performance computer code in a language such as C, C++, Fortran, Scala, or Rust.

A full list of selection criteria is available within the position description.
