Job description:

DESY

The DESY Nanolaboratory (DESY NanoLab) is a facility providing access to advanced nano-characterization, nano-structuring and nano-synthesis techniques which are complementary to the advanced X-ray techniques available at DESY’s lightsources PETRA III, FLASH and the European XFEL. With a circumference of 2.3 km PETRA III is the largest and one of the most brilliant storage ring light sources in the world. 25 beamlines are operational for users. The aim of the project is to understand the corrosion behaviour of Al based alloys on a single grain-level, which is hampering their wide spread application as energy efficient lightweight construction materials. In the project the formation of the grain orientation dependent passivation layer on the alloy surfaces will be investigated at the DESY NanoLab by a suite of scanning probe microscopy methods. In addition, novel surface sensitive scanning X-ray methods will be developed, important for PETRA IV. The bulk of the samples will be investigated by high energy grain mapping at PETRA III. The project is a collaboration between the DESY NanoLab and P21.2, PETRA III and an industrial partner.

About your role:

  • Characterization of polycrystalline alloy surfaces by scanning probe microscopy
  • Characterization by surface and bulk sensitive X-ray methods, also XPS
  • Extraction of grain orientation dependent corrosion mechanisms
  • X-ray and microscopy data analysis

About you:

  • Master´s degree in Physics, Chemistry or Material Science
  • Experience with microscopy or X-ray methods
  • Experience with complex data analysis is an asset
  • Good computing skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Very good knowledge of English (both speaking and writing) is mandatory
  • Ability to work in a team

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

We look forward to receiving your application via our application portal:
