Background:

Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City. The Youth Education Department provides year-round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

Scope of Work:

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program that prepares newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, social-emotional learning, physical education, and life skills classes. Field trips are held on Fridays.

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy is seeking a Physical Education Teacher who will create daily physical education / movement lessons for Lower School students (Grades K-5). Both Physical Education Teachers will contribute to the Program’s goals of fostering students’ social-emotional development and building a strong sense of community among the students and staff.

Position term: July 1– August 16, 2024

Hours:

  • Training: July 1-3, 2024: Up to 24 hours of training

    • Foundational online training modules to be completed independently ahead of synchronous staff training dates
  • Main Program: July 1 – August 16, 2024: 5 hours per day, Monday to Wednesday, 12:00 pm to 5:00pm.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Participate in mandatory school programing.
  • Implement a 6-week culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum
  • Submit daily lesson plans on a weekly basis in advance of the date of instruction
  • Utilize for sheltered instructional approaches (SIOP) for English Language Learners/multilingual learners, K-12 in the curriculum
  • Pending demand, provide after-care supervision to small cohort of students from 3:30pm to 5:00pm, Monday to Thursday.
  • Complete the All-Staff program evaluation
  • Review student progress
  • Comply with all IRC policies and protocols
  • Participate in one after-school parent/teacher conference evening during the academy

Job Requirements:

  • Experience with teaching, leading, or coaching group physical education or sports programming required.
  • Bachelors or higher degree in physical education or related field highly desired
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners/multilingual learners utilizing a Sheltered Instructional (SIOP) approach, is preferred
  • Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong team player who is self-directed and organized
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian.)

Working Environment***:***

  • NYSA takes place in a centrally located school (TBD) in New York City. All applicants must be willing to relocate to the New York City area for the entirety of the Academy.

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
