The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. To this end, the work of the Department is aligned under a clear mission, to enable United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and solutions.
This position is located in the Department of Safety and Security (DSS), in the Division of Partnerships and Specialized Services (DPSS) UNHQ. It is responsible for large and challenging engineering projects, applying a full range of engineering theories and techniques in the design, construction, and maintenance of physical security systems for UN compounds, premises of specialized agencies, and Peace missions. It reports to the Chief of the Physical Security Section.

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Physical Security Specialist will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
• Applies commonly used engineering solutions, practices, and precedents in completing projects related to the design, construction, or repair of buildings and related physical security systems and devices.
• Evaluates, reviews and revises project documents, and analyzes design specifications included in security project’s proposals for accuracy, soundness, feasibility and cost.
• Recommends solutions to unusual physical security problems.
• Conducts technical studies on physical security topics, developing guidelines for the general planning and maintenance of physical security systems.
• Calculates stresses and strain affecting proposed structures, considering such factors as estimated load, water pressure, wind resistance, soil characteristics, temperature fluctuations and nature of building materials to be used as well considering the security risks to which the structure is exposed.
• Keeps abreast, through relevant engineering literature, of significant trends and the development of improved methods and physical security equipment.
• Leads efforts of team studying critical problems relating to design or construction of systems and facilities. Makes recommendations for resolution of problems in the physical security area.
• Participates in planning and assessment missions, serving as technical adviser to committees or international meetings.
• Provides training on physical security topics to various audiences.
• Produce drawings and sketches as required on architectural design software.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in engineering, architecture, security management or other related fields. A first-level university degree in the specified fields of studies with two (2) additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in physical security, architecture, structural engineering or related area is required.
Experience in the project management of physical security related projects is required.
Experience working within the United Nations System or other similar international organization is desirable.
Experience in the conduct of physical security assessments and blast mitigation projects is desirable.
Experience in using architectural design software is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.
NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
